Hey,
I know there has been many hours put into custom sound files at train-sim.com, but some of the files just don't sound very realistic to me. The best EMD sounds that I have so far are from Trainmaster. Those aren't perfect, but they aren't half bad at all. Unforntunately there is no way for me to use these files anyway. If somebody would be willing to develop/record a super accurate set of sounds that actually sounded liked the real thing, I would be willing to pay for an add-on. The Dash9 sound for MSTS is quite bad, but their gp38 is at least ok. EMD's have that very distinctive sound and I just don't think MSTS captures it very well. Plus to save space they don't use individual files for each notch, but rather only a few that are rpm faded or something like that. Any input or ideas here would be very much appreciated!

RE: Realistic Sound

Jon,
The problem with the seperate files for that jump a sound on every notch is that they tend to skip during replay in the game... the lousy sound engine (check that) the less than optimal sound engine that Kuju used does not make smooth transitions when replaying wave samples.... amoung other sins...
That is why a lot of us use either frequency and volume shifted sounds with a smaller number of samples.... It just sounds better...
Trust me on this....Chuck Schneider

RE: Realistic Sound

After thinking about what you said and listening to the sounds, they do change very abruptly and don't have much transition. What you said makes sense now. From what I've seen in the editors and layout, Kuju did a piss poor job in some places. Half the variables in the .eng file don't work or were never programmed to work with the game and various triggers in the sound files don't work either. The activity editor is ok, but it is very inefficient to use although the layout is easy to understand to me. I must say they did ok overall since it was their first shot, but I don't think there will be any future versions at this point. When Raildriver gets configured so it will work with Trainmaster I will use it on that game. Thanks for the input.

RE: Realistic Sound

The speed at which the engine sounds (Variable2 related) are heard to change with increase/decrease in the trottle setting is effected by the DieselEngineMaxRPMChangeRate() value in the .eng file. Make this value smaller and the sounds will take longer to change.
