I'm just getting started in looking over the sound files that come with MSTS, and need some basic info. From what I can see, there are 2 basic sound files for passenger cars: GenPassWagModern.sms GenPassWagSteam.sms What is the difference between these 2?There are 4 different freight car files: GenFreightWag1.sms " for 2.sms " for 3.sms " for 4.sms What are the differences here? Should they be randomly assigned to cars?I've downloaded the Dzug sound files for wagons from the library. How many cars should this be installed in? Will it clash with the regular files above in the sim operation?Any help and guidance is appreciated.Ted

Welcome to the challenging world of MSTS and .sms files. You will find some revealing .sms info at the steam4me site at http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/tutorials/index.htmlThe difference is in the texture of the random files. You must learn about .wag files and the best way is to "associate" them with your unicode text editor. If you have Win2000 that is notepad, anything else needs wordpad, write, or whatever it's called. If you study the .wag file, down toward the end, you will find an entry like this:Sound ( "GenFreightWag2.sms" )That is the call to the .sms, which in turn, calls the wave, or a number of them at random. Each is identified in the .sms which should also be opened in a unicode editor. > >There are 4 different freight car files: >GenFreightWag1.sms >" for 2.sms >" for 3.sms >" for 4.sms >What are the differences here? Should they be randomly >assigned to cars? > They are randomly assigned to sounding assemblies for wagons so that you don't get too horrific a repetition. >I've downloaded the Dzug sound files for wagons from the >library. How many cars should this be installed in? Will >it clash with the regular files above in the sim operation? > I think you came to the right place to ask, but I also advise you to begin sorting out how these files work. The instructions in the fine dzug readme.txt are very clear. you add the sounds to individual wagons at the expense of the default sounds. But once you get the gist of things, restoring the default sounds would be a walk in the cake. But after hearing the dzug brake sounds and wagon sounds, I doubt you will want to do anything but keep adding it to other wagons too.Good Luck Ted. Bring other questions here. Use the readme files for they are often the trigger mechanism for understanding the finer points of MSTS' inner workings.Kind regards, MikeBuilding your Railroad to Margaritaville http://home.tampabay.rr.com/musings/keys.htm
