I downloaded a nice set of wav. files and a sms. for Wag sounds. They are by Rich Boehringer. These are for outside sounds. My question is how come in some cars they will work and others they will not. I can install this line Sound "../../common.snd/dzug/dzug.sms" ) in one wag file and it will work OK and another Wag file it will not.???????????????? Thank You Rich for the sounds.

I've done a bit of foolimg around with sound files to alias them. Found a few times LIGHTS or SOUNDS might not work in a newly downloaded piece. Found thru working with them, a few times, that the use of OPENING and CLOSING parenthesis inside the files was done incorrectly by a previous editor of it. If this kind of mistake is made, and its done is a certain way, the file will still load in MSTS, not causing a crash, but it will only work the way MSTS reads it. By this I mean that a sound or light section might be skipped over by the program. The best way to tell if the file is corrupt THIS way is to try the wagon in MSTS with the original sound file line there. If its silent THEN, then it'll always be silent, even if you add a changed file. In this case, you have to go thru the file checking the proper usage of OPENING and CLOSING parenthesis. (Luckily wagon files aren't that long. An ENGINE file with this problem is a DOG.) Always backup your work.Ted
Ted, That fixed the sound. After the light section there were five Closing parenthesis and should only be four. Funny thing is the "name" line was the very last line in the WAG file and it was reading it because I had changed the wagon name and it showed the new name in Con Builder. Thanks again...

Glad you got found your problem. Sounds like the same problem I hit, an extra in the light section. I didn't mention MY find in the lights section because I didn't want you to ONLY look there. The fact that the name shows in ConBuilder, which I use religiously, but the sound still wasn't working in MSTS doesn't mean anything. ConBuilder doesn't look into files for the name the same way MSTS does for loading and using.I read in one thread that in one of the original wagons that came with MSTS that the brake didn't work on the car. No one could figure why. One guy finally went thru the file LINE by LINE and found the problem: Any extra parenthesis. This was shutting down the reading of the file prematurely by MSTS whenever it loaded it for use, before the brake section.
Very well done fellas!I had not run across this problem (yet) but as a soundman (retired) I absolutely *love* Rich Boehringer's wag sounds as the absolute best I've ever heard.Kind regards, MikeBuilding your Railroad to Margaritaville http://home.tampabay.rr.com/musings/keys.htm
I haven't gotten into different sound files for the wagons. How does this work? If I set a certain file to a certain boxcar, and then go to a consist with that boxcar in it, then move back in the consist til I'm at that car, do I then here the sounds?Where is Rich Boenringer's site for sounds?Ted
The cool wagon sound can be found at Train-Sim in sound. The file is "dzug" When installed in a Wag file you can hear it outside at 55 feet or less. That is where the SMS is set for activation. It is vary realistic sound. I have a few consists set up with all the same car and it has that Wag file set to "dzug sound" and in view 4 it seems real...It has both couple and uncouple sounds. Two different squeals and a rail sound all built in it..
