RE: Increasing the volume for horns

LAST EDITED ON Dec-01-02 AT 07:46 PM (EST)

It is true that you cannot modify the volume of the horn in the .eng file. However, you could change the volume in the .sms files (located in the SOUND folder) one of three ways:First, if you’re lucky, the locomotive you wish to modify will have a Volume ( 0.5 ) statement in the horn statements section (or a similar value). If this is the case, you simply change the number in between the parenthesis marks to a higher number. The minimum is ( 0.0 ) and the maximum is ( 1.0 ).If there is no Volume statement, then it is already at maximum ( 1.0 ). You can lower the other sounds by placing Volume ( 0.5 ) statements where you need them.The final method would be to increase the volume of the actual .wav file. For this you need a sound editing program like GoldWave http://www.goldwave.com .You can find instructions for adjusting the volume of the .wav file here http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/tutorials/makesound_01.htmlThere are two .sms files for you to modify:
the ***cab.sms file is for the inside sounds and requires the sound .wav files be 11025hz, 16bit, stereo format;
the ***eng.sms file is for the outside sounds, and requires the .wav files to be 11025hz, 16bit, mono format.Here's a copy of the default GP-38 statement for the bell, to show you where to place the Volume ( 0.25 ) statement. Stream (
Skip ( **** This stream allows the horn to be played at the same time **** )
Priority ( 6 )
Volume (0.25)
Triggers ( 2
Discrete_Trigger ( 10 StartLoopRelease ( 1 File ( "x_gp_bell1.wav" -1 ) SelectionMethod ( SequentialSelection ) ) )
Discrete_Trigger ( 11 ReleaseLoopReleaseWithJump () )
)
)Edit: I forgot the usual warnings. Backup your files before editing, and use Wordpad as the .sms file text editor.
