Ralf Hagen wrote a SMS primer some time ago which was featured on some German MSTS web sites - unfortunately it was in German. This file has now been translated into English and may be found in the Tutorials section of my web page below.Chuck Zeiler's excellent Sound Tutorial that was in a message thread here a few weeks ago has also been placed on that page.RegardsYuri.

RE: .sms Tutorial

Thanks a lot for the translation on this very interesting tutorial from Ralf Hagen: I am sure it will be our "bible" and reading this, I already clarified many things about loop instructions....But by the way, I am still searching informations concerning variables or triggers about electric loc dynamic brakes to play my sound wav files!!!
See my post "http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID11/246.htmlHelp me!!!...Newalex

RE: .sms Tutorial

Hi Yuri,I noticed in the Discrete Trigger Appendix that you have labelled a few entries with question marks. After ploughing through the SMS files I've found that triggers 56 and 57 relate to the vigilance alarm (or dead man device). 56 occurs when the alarm starts sounding, by example, and 57 occurs when the driver resets the alarm (Z key). Also, which couple and uncouple triggers trigger, ... depend on the coupling type. I haven't looked at this in further detail yet but you might want to note that down on the page, or something...Cheers,
Alex

I couldn't work out what Ralf meant by Si-Fa, hence the question marks. Thanks for the feedback. I'll update the appendix later today. This is exactly what I hoped would happen with publishing Ralf's tutorial. In the long run the whole community benefits.RegardsYuri.

RE: .sms Tutorial

Excellent article Yuri! Clears up alot I was wondering about. Being into music and sampling myself, I must say MS is kinda with the 'standards' of sampling, and then way out in left field from it?
Words like 'velocity', 'gain', 'pitch bend', and even 'controller' would've helped a guy like me to better understand the sound aspects of .SMS files. It's tricky enough with different samplers from Akai, Yamaha, Emu, et al, they all throw in a certain wrench to make them there own. But sampling and GM Midi has been around for over 20 years now and mostly 'harmonious' in standards, and MS couldn't incorporate that any better into a .SMS?If I ever dare to take another stab at the 'new frontier', this article will definately be the route map!

RE: .sms Tutorial

The line about samplers tickled me I must admit that learning to use the yamaha tx16w sampler was preparation for learning to use msts editors .... jv
