Superliner Sounds – image 2

If anyone has traveled Amtrak you'll know that Superliners make very distinct noises. The most distinct would probably be the toilet flush noise. Is it possible to record this sound and place it in MSTS for use as a sound for my Superliners? The problem I see is that this sound wouldn't be triggered by anything. Keybord buttons. To be most realistic it would happen whenever. I'm talking about adding it to the exterior sounds. Freight cars and passenger cars make sounds without being triggered, so I think this would be possible. If you think I'm nuts for wanting a flush sound you're probably right. But this is a very prevalent sound. Whether hearing it onboard or while waiting at a station and hearing the tanks fill. Also to complicate things, there is a big difference between Superliner I's and II's.I'll be taking the Southwest Chief in November so I'll be able to record many sounds .So is this possible or will my passengers just have to hold it ?

RE: Superliner Sounds

I suppose that you could record the toilet flush, and save the file as one of the random noise .wav files called for in the GENPASSWAGMODERN.SMS file. I do not have Suerliners, so I'm unsure of which GENXXX.SMS file they may be using for their sounds, but assuming that they use the GENPASSWAGMODERN.SMS file, below is a portion of that file, and one of those random sounds could become the toilet flush. A little experimentation with the Dist_Travelled_Trigger setting might yield a toilet flush every few miles or so, depending on the randomness of MSTS. This .sms file, and the associated .wav files, are located in the global Sound folder of MSTS. Streams ( 1

RE: Superliner Sounds

Geez, you're right. There they are. I haven't even touched (run) them.Anyway, they do use the GENPASSWAGMODERN.SMS file for the sound source, so SouthwestChief can still use the suggestion of replacing one of the x_dc_randomx.wav files with a toilet flush.

Sure I'll try to tape as many sounds as I can. Especially the one that I almost forgot about but is very, very distinct. I'm talking about the call attendent button or as I call it, the "DO DO" button. I'll be on the Southwest Chief during Thanksgiving week, so don't expect any sounds to soon now . They should be ready for the Christmas season Oops almost forgot.
When I save my recorded sounds on my computer, what should I save them as and how would I put them in the sound file for the passenger cars? Copy and paste?

RE: Superliner Sounds

The easiest approach would be to replace the x_dc_random2.wav file (located in the Global Sound folder) with the toilet sound, which you would save under the same file name. I would recommend that you re-name the original x_dc_random2.wav file so you could restore it later, if necessary.Keep in mind that you will be modifying a global sound file, meaning that every car (wagon) that uses this as the sound source, will have a toilet flushing sound. I'm suggesting using the x_dc_random2.wav file because it's PlayOneShot (plays the file once every 200 {meters?}), but there's no reason you cannot change the 200 to a larger number. You could copy/paste the whole PlayOneShot trigger statement and add that to the GenPassWagModern.sms file for the Attendant Button sound, and change the amount of Triggers by 1, but again, this affects every car (wagon) that uses this for sound. The original toilet sound should be saved as a 11025hz, 16bit, mono .wav file. It should be placed in the Global Sound folder.I will also point out that these sounds are the external sounds for the default Superliner wagons. I see no reference to inside or passenger view sounds. Sorry, I have not used these cars (yet) so I'm not familiar with their file structure. Also, I have not been on Superliner cars personally, so I cannot say what external sounds these cars make. Can the toilet and/or Attendant Button be heard outside?

Can the toilet and/or Attendant Button be heard
>outside?Yes and no. The noise you hear inside a Superliner, is very different. The toilet flush sound that I'll be recording is the outside sound. It's more of an airtank whosh and a high pitch whine sound. I originally thought this was some sort of brake sound. But one time while we waited at Alberquerque, I wanted to test it. So I went outside and had a freind flush a toilet. Sure enough I heard the sound. As for the attendant button, I'm not sure. But I'll record it for future use, perhaps for an interior sound. But unfortunately, my consist doesn't have an interior view. I'll have to wait for one or make a whole new fleet of accurate Superliners myself(which I am seriously considering). Thanks for the info. By the way, Do I need GoldWave to do this?

RE: Superliner Sounds

I'd recommend Goldwave as the conversion program, only because I know how that one works. You can get it for free. Other audio editing programs will do the same, but I cannot offer advise on the conversion process. I did open the Sound Recorder that comes with W98SE, and it does have the ability to convert .wav files to other sample rates, so that might work.
