RE: Alco Turbo sounds

Absolutely the best alco sounds available. Sounds just like the Missouri and Arkansas video tape that I have. It is beautiful. The only critisism I have is that the install instructions are useless. You certainly did not use these directions to install yours. There has to be modifications made to the directory structure. I don't care how beautiful the sounds are, if you leave a guy with his pants down, he is not going to like you.

Love it. Listen, just as an aside, I distinctly recall this turbo
sound from the yard switchers on the short line I grew up next to.
That was 100 years ago. Anyway, that engine has a bad hammer to it, and really, even the beat up old alcos didn't seem to hammer quite that bad, but the rest of it is absolutely prototypical. Those old turbos chirped in the most peculiar manner, but I remember the sound like it was yesterday. So I ran it through my sound editor and surgicaly removed the hammer. Sounds good; like there's some oil pressure now. (just kidding) If that sounds interesting, I can make that variation available. I'm very interested in using this and another alco file for a "Widowmaker" suplimental add-on --with permission, of course. Just an idea that occured to me. Right now, I'm experimenting with sms files to get it to sync revs with MUs. Its being stubborn but I gotta believe its possible. Whaddya think?Best Wishes,

RE: Alco Turbo sounds

Yardlimit:Don't know where EMD567 has gone. He shared with us a couple of engine sound files (like the Alco file in question) that had TONS of potential... then disappeared. Could be he was overwhelmed by the install problems?Anyway, yes, his Alco file is very good sounding. With some more work/editing, it could be SUPERB. To me, it sounds like a 239 Seymour McIntosh that was used in the RS1 and some S series engines more than the 244 Alco prime mover. BUT... it has so much potential. Also, his EMD567 sound file had that same smoothness in the transistions from Idle to Run 8 and back... but the sound sample he had access to didn't quite have the quality it needed to really pull this off in a top notch manner. I was going to offer to attempt to supply him with in-cab 567 sounds (as well as exterior) in whatever throttle notches/durations he needed to be able to replace the sound sample he had... but he seems to be GONE.IF you have the know-how to tweak his original sound files, perhaps we can work together to produce a SUPERB sounding EMD567 file for all the EMD F's and Geeps pounding out the miles out there in MSTS land. Of course, this is a very selfish offer I make... because I want to be the first one to use such a file! (LOVE the sound of a 567!)I haven't talked to my source with the 567 powered Geeps in quite some time, but if the engine(s) is still in service, I will very likely be able to get us some sound samples. yardlimit be my guest, hope you can do a better job than myself, looking forward to results, pls email a beta if possible. also to ken's 15/9 post, regarding the install probs, i used conbuilder to alias the sounds to other ADDON locos without errors,
(my directories are all default etc, since install), tested over and over without any errors.you need to create a folder called 'common.snd' in the trainset directory, and place file folder alcoturbo / emd567 into it, and then alias wih conbuilder.glad you like my first attempt gents, may not be doing anymore for a while until have learnt more regarding easier install procedures etc.
(any advice appreciated)

He LIVES! Welcome back EMD567.Trucker, eh? THAT explains the long periods of silence. (Trucking: Been there, done that when younger. Can be a tough job.)Would you like some custom 567 samples, both in cab and out? IF so, what kinds of sound bites would you need? (i.e. long clip of idling? Each notch? Full clip of idle-wide-open return-to-idle? What?)Andre "Coonskin" Ming

RE: Alco Turbo sounds

EMD: Okay. It may take me a few weeks to pull it together. I'll have to contact the shortline owner/acquaintance to see if he thinks it's a go. I will then have to have at least a half day to spend going over there (about 45 minutes drive). What I thought I might do, is simply get the sound(s) on tape, and send the tape to you via snail mail. (I have yet to learn how to make .wav files, etc.) You can then work your magic on them. Do you have the hardware to handle 8mm video tape?I assume from your reply that you only use the idle sampling, and then vary the pitch to get the revving effect? (Which is why it's so seamless and smooth up and down the rev scale.)That so, and assuming my contact agrees to letting me do this, I may also get you some Run 8 sounds for you to use as a guideline in setting the pitch values for your version of Run 8. Plus, you can compare your incab sound to the incab sound of a 567 at full song.Bear in mind that if we attempt to do this, we WILL tinker with it until we get it as close as our samples/abilities/software allow. (The EMD 567 is my favorite of ALL primemovers... so I will be a picky beta tester!!). Once we've got it as best it can be, I will help you with some Install text steps. This way, if it's written by a dummy for dummies, then surely us dummies can get it installed.Note: Did you read that excellent sound .wav tutorial for MSTS? Seeing as you're getting into sound, you really ought to check it out. It may give you some ideas on how we can tweak this thing so it can really blow the troops away once we're "done". Here's the URL to the thread:http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID11/218.htmlIn the above thread, we learn that it's best to render the cab sound and engine sounds differently. Having been in many different types of engines under load, the sound you hear inside is very different to what you hear when you hang your head out the window. That's why the different renderings mentioned in the thread above. With a 567 powered engine, inside the cab the predominate sound is the Roots blower (supercharger). Taking a sound clip from inside should produce that for us.When you hang your head out the window, the exhaust note starts coming more into earshot.Getting the headout sound will be a bit more challenging, but I may be able to simply hang the cam outside? We shall see. If not, I can position to get the sounds needed.I already have some sound clips from a Frisco GP7 taken nearly 25 years ago... but unfortuately, they were taken enroute, so there's lots of ambient noise (i.e. rail clatter, rattling electrical cabinet doors, etc.)This might not be acceptable for the sim, so thought it best to start with a fresh clip taken from a stationary engine.BTW, how much length in time do you need on the idle clip?Oh no... just had a thought. Wouldn't it be a bummer if his geeps have been repowered with 645's??? Nahhh. Surely not.Andre "Coonskin" Ming

RE: Alco Turbo sounds

Hi EMD567;No real criticism. I certainly meant no offense. There always seems to be problems with install files. I believe most are never checked out.The issue at hand however is the reality of the Alco sounds. You have it man, wherever you got it, you got it. I have been listening closely to diesels since 1946 and this is it. As far as I am concerned, I don't need any oil in my sound files.Appreciate your effort. Thanks.

Heck, I don't know. If its that close, maybe I shouldn't fool with it. I'm just as interested in realism as the next person, but it sounded like someone was pounding on the inside of the engine door with a 5lb. hammer. I'm no engine expert but I worked around diesel
generator systems in the Navy a little; have any idea what component
in there made such a prominent sound? Must have driven engineers nuts. You almost half expect an access door to crash open off the hinges and a piece of cylinder head go rocketing across the yard at any moment. (chuckle) Maybe thats what makes it fun.

RE: Alco Turbo sounds

Hello to Yardlimit. The exact sound from these babies is dependent on where the microphone is placed. At track level, you could argue a little as to the texture of the sound. The purist however, wants to hear the engine and not all the extraneous junk. The video tape that I referred to, "The Arkansas and Missouri" runs just Alco. There was a scene in the video of a unit with the covers off and a mechanic adjusting the lifters. With this Alco file we are talking about, if I close my eyes, I can see this scene in the video. If I had a vote, I would say, leave it, it is beautiful. My two cents before taxes.

I could just sit there for hours and run the throttle up and down enjoying it. Thanks a lot. I'm going to get the EMD sounds as soon as I can log into the download area.Dave Clarke

if I can do a file insert using the forum tools, but you can contact me at mccarty41@msn.com. if you'd like the sample. Your file has much potential. If I can get it to MU, it would be my choice, hands down for Fowlis's engine. I won't be doing too much further with it until I get all the bugs resolved from my "Widow" activity. I've been up day and night trying to salvage my credibility. (hah)Best Wishes,

In a nutshell: copy the new cab and eng sms files to the sound directory of the engine of choice.Then...edit the xxx.eng file of your chosen engine to point to these new files; in the following two places:first sound line encountered:
Sound ("xxxxeng.sms")and second sound line encountered:
Sound ("xxxxcab.sms")If new wav files are included; they need to go in the sound folder as well. Save anything that might get overwritten.Thats it. Be sure and save the old .eng; cab.sms; and eng.sms files
in case you dont like it.

RE: Alco Turbo sounds

Hi. i just got the new Alco turbo sounds and was wondering how to install them into my RS-2. I read the above post, but it is too complicated for me.. any way you could simplify it for me. And i dont have connbuilder , do you know where i might be able to get it? i tried the process above and it end up giving me no sound at all. any help would be appreciated. I need instructions though in the simpilist form as i am not the smartest when it comes to this stuff.
Thanks in advance,

RE: Alco Turbo sounds

Yardlimit,Tried your suggestion, which makes perfect sense, to no avail.
Either get a message box saying can't locate .sms file or there is no engine sound at all. Tried a few other approaches as well including creating a new folder in the Alias file. Other than that conbuilder anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks!!Bob S

RE: Alco Turbo sounds

Ok. Two points.I want to clarify. you will normally have two .sms files for each engine. one for the cab; one for the eng. (sounds outside the engine) Now... the whole thing is achieved by editing two values in the engine file. Open the engine file. the first sound statement you will encounter some lines down will be something like this: Sound ( "Alco244Eng.sms" )What you print between the quotes must be EXACTLY as the sms file name
reads including punctuation and case just to be safe. This sms file had better be living in the sound folder of this engine before you make these changes and before you run MSTS. Otherwise it will choke. The second sound reference you will encounter for the cab later on in the eng file will look similar to this:Sound ( "Alco244Cab.sms" )Here again, what you print between those quotes had better match
a Cab type sms file currently residing within the sound folder for this engine. If these two sms files exist anywhere other than the SOUND folder for this engine, the the eng file wont be able to find them when MSTS executes it; hence you wont get any sound, or worse you will get an unrecoverable error. You can actually have more than one set of cab/eng sms files living in the engine sound folder, but you can only edit the engine file to point to one such set at a time. The above are examples.
The neat thing is that you can edit your engine file to change from one to another rather quickly to suit your mood. Now aliasing works a little different. Usually, the sound folder for your engine will reside in a folder in the trainset directory called COMMON.SND. In a situation like this you edit your engine file to point to sms files in a selected sound folder within the common folder, instead of the sound folder within a single engine folder. As an example, an alias to a GP38 sound folder located within the COMMON.SND folder would look something like this: Sound ( "../../COMMON.SND/GP38SOUND/GP38Eng.sms" )You are still pointing to an sms file from within your chosen engine file, but now it resides in an entirely different folder. The advantage of this is that you can use a one location sound file referrence for any number of engines.Best Wishes,Yardlimit.

RE: Alco Turbo sounds

Yardlimit:Think you made a typo, shouldn't that be:( "../../COMMON.SND/GP38/SOUND/GP38Eng.sms" ) ?Note the forward slash between GP38 (pointing MSTS to that folder) then "SOUND" (pointing MSTS to find that folder within the GP38 folder).Your above example won't work, I'm a'feared.Coonskin

RE: Alco Turbo sounds

We'll, what I do is just put one folder inside COMMON.SND for each sound type.
"GP38/SOUND" would indicate yet another folder inside GP38 with the sound files. I just cut to the chase and put one folder inside COMMON.SND (name it what you wish). This folder contains only the neccessary sms files the engine file points to, and the required .wav files that the sms files expect to find within. Its just my approach. There is a variety of ways this stuff can be arranged, and any number of locations for the files are possible. The key here is to make sure that what is placed within the " " accurately reflects the proper tree stuctured directory search MSTS must go thru to find the file. Best Wishes,Yardlimit.

RE: Alco Turbo sounds

Well after much time and trial and error, I finally got the sounds to work. The entry I made in the .eng file is:" ..\\..\\Common.Snd\\AlcoTurbo\\Alias\\AlcoTurboEng.sms "and
" ..\\..\\Common.Snd\\AlcoTurbo\\Alias\\AlcoTurboCab.sms "With the downloaded files placed in the Common.Snd folder in the trainset folder and the .wav files in the engines sound folderHope this will help anyone else.
Bob SP.S. They sound more like the earlier Alco 539 engine than the 244.
Would be best suited for an RS-1 or and S-2
