Kevin;
I ask for you, as I see you answering many threads regarding aliasing; and I have learned much from your answers. I am feeling quite comfortable now, aliasing cabs & sounds to various other engines or to a "Common" folder. But!! After finally installing all the Gen packs and custom sounds and the "Chug" update; I've become so engrossed with the sounds; that I thought I would try aliasing other "GE's" to the Genisis sounds. But, no matter what I try; I keep getting the same type of error msg when I check it out in conbuilder.
The sound definition file GenisisEng.sms specified by the file LMX8501.ENG
is missing from the folder
C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT GAMES\TRAIN SIMULATOR\TRAINS\TRAINSET\LMX8501\SOUND
or from the main sound folder (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\SOUND)
The error was found on this line: Sound ( "GenisisEng.sms" )
----------------------------------------

The sound definition file Genisiscab.sms specified by the file LMX8501.ENG
is missing from the folder
C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT GAMES\TRAIN SIMULATOR\TRAINS\TRAINSET\LMX8501\SOUND
or from the main sound folder (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\SOUND)
The error was found on this line: Sound ( "Genisiscab.sms" )I've tryed "../../Common.Snd/Genisis/alias/Genisiscab.sms"(and eng) and "..\\..\\Common.Snd\\Genisis\\alias\\Genisiscab.sms"(and eng.sms)and "genisiscab.sms" & "genisiseng.sms" all within ( )with and without a sound folder and you name it! Any ideas as to what I may have missed, or am I just spinning my wheels? Ron K of Rockford

RE: Paging Kevarc

What you need to do it copy the two genesis sms files from the alias folder to the sound directory of the engine to be aliased. Then edit the eng file with the lines like this:
Sound ( genesiscab.sms ) and
Sound ( genesiseng.sms )BTW, it is Genesis not GenisisKevin Arceneaux

RE: Paging Kevarc

Okay!!! So I finally got it to work! Creating a sound folder and putting the cab & eng sms files in did not work, but by aliasing directly to Common Sound "../../Common.Snd/Genesis/alias/Genesiscab.sms & Eng.sms did work! Now all I need to do is figure out how to change horns. Thanks again for your input. Ron K of RockfordOh yeah, I spelled Genesis correctly this time !!!

RE: Paging Kevarc

Do you have the horn sounds you want? If so just rename it to the horn sound and copy it to the folder overwriting the old wave file. Or edit the sms file and point to the new wav file.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: Paging Kevarc

Hello again Kevin!
Regarding the changing of horn sounds, since I'm aliasing the sounds to the Genesis common sound folder; I don't want to change anything there; as the KL5 amtrak horn needs to be retained; right. I was gonna try some of the horn files that KLW had in the library some time back; but I'm still a bit confused as to where exactly that I should rename it. Ron K of Rockford

RE: Paging Kevarc

OK, what you need to do it determine what sounds you would like for what engine since you appear to want different horns for different engines. You would modify the two sms files to point to the horn you want to use. For example lets say your CSX engines are all going to use the same horn. You would open the GP38cab.sms and search for the horn wav lines. There you would change the path to the csx horn. After you make the changes you will save it as csxgp38cab.sms. You would do the same for the eng.sms file. You then would edit the eng file for point to the correct sms file.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: Paging Kevarc

Good evening Kevin; I do believe I'm getting the hang of this! After your last input to me here, when I got home this evening; the 1st thing I did was to tackle this stage of the alias. I copied the Genesis sms files and renamed them Genesis1cab.sms & Genesis1eng.sms. The path for the horn wavs. is directed to the common sounds (Horns) folder; so it was just a matter of changing from the Genesis K5LA horn to a SFK3LA horn. 1st units I tryed this on were the LMX 8501 & 8543. I aliased the Eng. file to alias the sounds to "../../Common.Snd/Genesis/alias/Genesis1cab.sms" & Genesis1eng.sms
So far everything is working to my liking. Now I need to increase the sound of the horn for the outside view somehow, as it sounds pretty weak. And I need to edit the bell sound so as not to come on every time the horn is sounded.
Again, let me thank-you; my friend; for the info you supplied me; as it has helped me greatly in my endevor. Ron K of Rockford

There are a couple of posts here for increasing the volumne. The bell is controlled in the eng file change this line to look like this
DoesHornTriggerBell( 0 ) The zero turns the bell on/off with the horn. a 1 there turn the bell on till you manually turn it off.
