Just wondering if there's any way to make sounds happen at certain locations? Like when a train goes around a curve and the wheels squeel, or wheels going across a switch. Thanx

RE: Curve squeel, Switch clacking?

One possible solution to the squeal sound is to make a Sound Source of a squeal, and place it at a curve in the track. If you make the loop long enough, it won't repeat too much to be offensive (about a 2 second squeal, about 10 seconds of silence). And, the sound level diminishes as you move away from it. Properly placed (in about the middle of the curve) you won't notice that the sound is playing before you get to the spot. I've put a few of them on Bill Burnett's Sea View Route. There are plenty of sharp curves there. It sounds just fine, except where the track loops around itself, and then you hear the squeal Sound Source down below. That can be fixed in the Distance statement in the .sms file, when I get around to it.As for the switch sounds, there is a Sound Region that comes with the ETA (Enhanced Track Audio) package. It is called Points, and you place it on a switch. I haven't done that yet. Seems like a lot of work, putting a sound region on every switch on the route. Actually, that's four items that would have to be placed: Default end, Points start, Points end, and Default start, at every switch!

the control key while you click on them. After that, do a control-C to copy to the clipboard, and you can paste them where ever you want using control-V. Provided you only paste to the same size switches, everything should end up in proper alignment.

RE: Curve squeel, Switch clacking?

I need a help. I tried to set a sound region before a switch in a station, but the sound region automatically extends to all tracks which are on the left and on the right on the switch, while I need a sound region which is only bright as the switch is. The parallel tracks at the right and at the left should maintain their default sound region. Is there a way to squeeze the width of the sound region?
Thanks for any help.Carlo Santucci

Carlo, in the Route Editor, press F2, click on one of the yellow pyramids on one of the outside tracks to select it. It will turn into a wire frame. Press F3. Now you can move the outside pyramid to the inside track. If necessary, you can do the same to the other pyramid.

Is it possible to add a new sound region type, in addition to the 10 standard ones? Or have I to replace one not used type with the switch region?

RE: Curve squeel, Switch clacking?

You can add more Sound Regions. I don't know if there is a limit. I would suggest opening an existing Sound Region .sms file, and change only the .wav file names, and saving the edited .sms as the new Sound Region name.I opened my route's ttype.dat file (located in the route's root folder) to find out which file I was using as my Default Sound Region. This showed me I was using "raeurotrack0in.sms" as the inside default Sound Region, and "raeurotrack0ex.sms as the outside Sound Region. The first word in quotes is the descriptive name, which will appear in the Route Editor. These files are part of the ETA package. Note the number 11, below, indicating that I have eleven Sound Regions for this particular route. This number must match the number of Sound Regions that appear in the ttype.dat file.SIMISA@@@@@@@@@@JINX0t1t______11
TrackType ( "Default" "raeurotrack0in.sms" "raeurotrack0ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Concrete Supported" "raeurotrack1in.sms" "raeurotrack1ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Wood Supported" "raeurotrack2in.sms" "raeurotrack2ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "In Tunnel" "raeurotrack3in.sms" "raeurotrack3ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Steel Bridge" "raeurotrack4in.sms" "raeurotrack4ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Girder Bridge" "raeurotrack5in.sms" "raeurotrack5ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Under Bridge" "raeurotrack6in.sms" "raeurotrack6ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Concrete Bridge" "raeurotrack7in.sms" "raeurotrack7ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Crossing Platform" "raeurotrack8in.sms" "raeurotrack8ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Wooden Bridge" "raeurotrack9in.sms" "raeurotrack9ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Points" "raeurotrack10in.sms" "raeurotrack10ex.sms" )The .sms files and the .wav files for the Sound Regions are located in the global SOUND folder (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\Sound). Your path may be different. As always, the editing is done with Wordpad, back up every file before modifying, and punctuation counts.

RE: Curve squeel, Switch clacking?

I'm sorry, but I was unable to get the CTRL+C and CTRL+V copy/paste to work. I placed four Sound Regions on a switch (Default, Points, Points, Default), selected all four while holding the CTRL key, but they failed to place when I hit F5 and then CTRL+V. We will have to wait for jtr1962 to explain the procedure to both of us.

RE: Curve squeel, Switch clacking?

Unfortunately, the procedure I mentioned doesn't work with sound regions. I had been using that procedure to select and place multiple objects, but apparently it doesn't work with everything. You can't select multiple track sections, for instance. Even though you can select multiple sound regions, you can't copy and paste them somewhere else, which leaves you back to manually placing them at every set of points. Sorry about the misinformation.
