Hi to all,
I am working on a sound file for Matt Harters PCC1.
It is finished except for the compressor. I have the wav. file I want to use, but the SMS. files make no provision for a trigger.
What I want to do is have the comressor run only while the car is at stop & the brakes applied. The wave file is just long enough for a oneshot.
This is my very first project and would appreciate any help you can provide. To see the sms. files look in the sound files for the T-36 Tram. I borrowed heavily from this modifying the power cruise sound.I think the file is called strasbahn. If any other info is required please let me know.

RE: PCC1 Sound File

This is only a suggestion, I haven't tried it out.Perhaps you could re-name the compressor sound CRUISE1.wav, or whatever file is used as the "idle" sound. I think that the compressor sound would run as long as the throttle wasn't advanced past idle.

RE: PCC1 Sound File

I posted earlier today under Traction - Matt's PCC thread. Maybe should have posted here.I'm rummaging through about 25 hours of SF Muni videotapes I have of PCC's, for:Bell
MG Set
Wheels on rails - straight
Wheels on rails - turn
Power off accelerator (PCC's have a unique "popping" sound there; but there may be no way to incorporate it into MSTS; we;ll see.)After I find the cleanest sources I can, I'll work with them in Sound Forge, and hope - fingers crossed - I can come up with something. Matt, I noticed there is a horn lever, but no bell lever; at least not on the version I downloaded; maybe it's an old version.Note: Matt's excellent model is of an all-electric PCC. This type does not use air at all for anything. It was postwar, went into production around 1948, I believe. Braking was accomplished by drum brakes, dynamic braking, and track brakes. An all electric car had a higher average speed, because it could leave a stop more quickly; the brakes released instantly, compared with air brakes. Predecessors were air-electric, using air for brakes (they also had track brakes), and doors. But any sound was fairly muted. Not totally silent, but not very loud, either.

Norm,
You're absolutly correct about brake systems on the PCC-3.
I had forgotten about that. The pop sound you refer to is the electrical contactor releasing when the motorman took his foot off the accelerator. There were 2 or more types of bell sounds. A ringing like a alarm clock & a single clang. I used to live in Brooklyn, New York During the late 30s &40s. Irode the Coney Island & McDonald Av. lines Both ran PCCs. From what I can remember they used the single gong. At present I am using a single gong sound & have deleted the compressor file after reading your post.
Will hold off submitting my file until I hear from you further.
Looks like your on to something there. BTW. there is a Bell button
just above the sander button. In the read me it says i have version beta 03. My Computer specs are in my profile

RE: PCC1 Sound File

Thanks for your reply. My days off are Wed-Thur-Fri. I work 4 long shifts. I'm just starting going through my tapes. Every time I find what I think is a suitable sound source, I save it, and then find a better one further on! I nearly have to review these tapes in real time, so it'll be awhile before I finish. But I'll let you and everyone know when I get them.Yes, Brooklyn and Queens had a large fleet of air electric PCC's.Here is a link (if you haven't discovered it already!) to a photo archive of New York PCC's, and other streetcars that ran in Brooklyn. This is 1 of 2 pages. There are a LOT of thumbnails on each page:http://davesrailpix.railfan.net/nyc/bqta.htmI bet you find at least one location you remember.(Now I gotta go see if I have beta 3.)

Norm,
Incredable, I have the same days off. But work 8:30 pm to 5:00 am.
Thanks for the link to the Brooklyn streetcars. Brings back some good memories.
Sooner or later we'll get this sound thing together. My Computer specs are in my profile

RE: PCC1 Sound File

I've put up some sound files on one of my websites. That way, it might be easier to get them at anyone's convenience. These are just starters. They might be just perfect, but I'm still looking through everything, and I think in another week or so, may find more stuff. Especially the bell. I'm going to also post this to Matt's PCC thread, in the Traction forum. Here's the link:http://www.normanspaulding.com/msts.htmHope nobody minds that the files are not on this site. I figure might as well save the bandwidth.Norm

RE: PCC1 Sound File

I have a working PCC bell in Matt's PCC beta now.If you go to the link I posted above, you can download the .WAV file, and the acelacab.sms file that works the bell. Instructions are there, as well; but it's not much. Just copy both files to the Sounds folder of PCC1 under Trainset in MSTS. Maybe make a backup of your existing acelacab.sms first...Hope to get a slightly better bell in a week or 3.Norm
