Please tell me what values to change in which files to increase the outside horn and bell volumes. The inside (cab) sounds are OK but the outside ones need to be increased. Thanks Marty Berr usmail1@cox.net

I'm no expert, but one place you can try is in the ****eng.sms file (in the SOUND folder of the locomotive you are adjusting). Find the statements for the horn (there are 3 in the GP38eng.sms file, and I pasted one sample below). Notice the VOLUME (0.25) in the second stream, which is for the bell. You can copy and paste it into the horn statement, adjusting the number upward, but how far upward I don't know. This edit should be done with WordPad, to preserve the Unicode format. Back up the file before editing. Stream ( Skip (**This stream allows the horn to be played at the same time**) Priority ( 6 ) Triggers ( 2 Discrete_Trigger ( 8 StartLoopRelease ( 1 File ( "x_gp_horn1.wav" -1 ) SelectionMethod ( SequentialSelection ) ) ) Discrete_Trigger ( 9 ReleaseLoopReleaseWithJump () ) ) )Stream ( Skip (**This stream allows the bell to be played at the same time**) Priority ( 6 ) Volume (0.25) Triggers ( 2 Discrete_Trigger ( 10 StartLoopRelease ( 1 File ( "x_gp_bell1.wav" -1 ) SelectionMethod ( SequentialSelection ) ) ) Discrete_Trigger ( 11 ReleaseLoopReleaseWithJump () ) ) )
I'm going to tell you what I THINK is going on, and if anyone knows better, please post here and correct my error(s).I think the maximum value for Volume is 1, and I think that MSTS will default to 1 if no Volume statement is given. Therefore, in the GP-38 example above, the horn is full volume, and the bell is 25% of the horn.
I just use Sound Recorder in the accessories menu to increase the volume. Just open the file you want to increase the volume of and in the "Effects menu click on "Increase Volume (by 25%)" Save it and go into MSTS and try it out. Do this over again if it still isn't loud enough. Make sure you make a backup copy of the original file becuase when you "decrease volume" it decreases it about 30-35%.
