I recently tried to run a train on the Marias Pass route and I am getting the box stating a missing .sms file. There is no specific file noted, just blank. It pops up about 6 times. The game locks up after a few moments. I have deleted all downloaded activities and services. The only time I touched the sound files in this route was to COPY and PASTE the ssource.dat file to my own route in order to get the additional sound sources. I do not see anything missing. Any suggestions ?Cound someone e-mail me the 'sound' folder from that route if possible? rstaples@bellatlantic.net
RE: Getting missing ".sms" message when loading Marias Pass
Wow! Deja vu! Exact same problems I had Bob, but I didn't even know SMS was associated with 'sound' at the time (newbie to MSTS AND personal computers). I had tried making a simple activity using VIA Engines/cars from Philly to Washington. Activity editor seemed fairly straightfoward, and I calculated and saved it. When I went to run it, exact same scenario as you encountered - oh yeah, and the overhead catenary was gone as well. I proceeded to drive out of Philly in the nice VIA train to get a glimpse at least, and this big freeze up occurs! I re-installed NEC 2.0, and all including my VIA activity looked better - but within 4-5 seconds from driving out of Philly, this intensfying whine develops in the cab - until I move a control, and have to do it every 4 seconds. Anyhoo, I scraped everything and started 'new' again, and all is working fine so far.I thought it must've been a SNAFU I did while making a activity for the first time? Good to know I'm not to alone.
RE: Getting missing ".sms" message when loading Marias Pass
Do you get this "missing sms" file during the initiation period (dashes appearing left to right across the bottom of the screen)? If so then the number of times you get that message relates to the number of times an object using it is trying to be loaded. ie 6 messages could mean six coaches of the same type which a missing sms, etc. This can help in identifyibg the culprit. However, the fact no file name is given is odd, unless the ref is for an un-named .sms.

For me, it was at 'start up' AND during the run. I just tried to bolster through as best I could until I couldn't take it anymore. Then's I ate's me spinach.
