Title says it all, when I access a new cabview directly from a given engine's \Cabview folder, it works fine, but if I try to alias it the speedometer needle disappears. Search here and in the loco design forum didn't turn up any previous threads about this particular glitch.Wierd cabview aliasing problem – image 1In the above pic everything is there, I have the 297cab.cvf in this engine's \Cabview folder, along with all the .ace files, and the .eng file reads:CabView ( 297cab.cvf )When I try to alias it:CabView ( "..\\..\\297CAB\\Cabview\\cab.cvf" )I get this;Wierd cabview aliasing problem – image 2Same .cvf file looking for the same needleblack.ace, which is in the same place in either folder. I tried opening in the cab editor, and deleting the speedometer needle (it IS visible in the cab editor), then making a new one, but same thing - in the game there's no speedometer needle, altho no error messages and all the other displays work correctly.May or may not be part of the same topic, when I uploaded the PO&N SD40s I included the forward view texture, with the .cvf file calling for;CabViewFile ( PONSDfrnt1024.ace )and after that I aliased all the other cabviews and controls to the 1.2 SD402;CabViewFile ( ..//..//SD402//CABVIEW//sd402lft.ace )
Graphic ( ..//..//SD402//CABVIEW//reverser.ace )and so on.That works well with the PO&N SD40s, the .eng accesses the .cvf directly, which then aliases the .ace files. Trying to alias within the alias fails every time tho, if I try to alias to the PO&N sd40 cabview\PONSD.cvf, I get nothing since it gets confused with too many alternate paths.

Does Conbuilder give any errors of a file not found?
MSTS doesn't give errors at all if cabview texture isn't found but Conbuilder does. MSTS only gives errors if the .cvf files aren't found.

-----You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!-----
Or probably, maybe you should waste your time reading it.
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

RE: Wierd cabview aliasing problem.

Jim:
Couple of things to try to narrow it down. Rename your current needleblack.ace and paste a copy of the .ace from the GP38 in there. If you still have the same problem, double check the path to the .ace. Try using one of the red or white needles to see if it shows up. Since it is just one needle that disappeared the problem would have to be in the position, the .ace file, or the path to the .ace file. Cyndi

Hmmmm...

Food for thought. No, Stooopid, conbuilder doesn't do anything since conbuilder don't recognize CVF files. For the aliasing thingamy in conbuilder you have to have an actual ENG file to alias from, conbuilder won't alias from any of the \Common.Cab folders since there are no ENG files, only CVF files.Your suggestion did trigger another idea tho, I've been working on PO&N bugs (actually KUJU bugs that PO&N keeps tripping over when I push the limits) for almost a year now, and haven't had any non-default stuff installed other than PO&N engines. So I copied the \Common.Cab folder back in to study how the Masters like Johan Pretorius did it, and found that instead of aliasing the CVF from the ENG, they instructed the end user to copy the CVF from the Alias folder to whatever engine they're using, then edit that ENG file to use the new CVF, which aliased the images. That's probably a better way to go, since I can then alias like JohanSteam did to different cabview folders depending on which ace file is needed.Cyndi, just for the hell of it I looked at your idea, position was irrelevant since I tried moving the needle to several wrong places including near the white and red needles, and it still didn't show up. Path wasn't it, since the path was the exact same path as needlered and needlewhite. Oddly enough I found that changing needleblack.ace to needlered.ace DID work! So I then opened needlered.ace in TGAtool2, changed the color to black and exported as needleblack.ace, then opened the cab editor again and changed the graphic to needleblack.ace, and THAT worked!Problem solved (I'm gonna use Johan's method), but it's still a mystery why both the original needleblack.ace (from the geep38) and needleblk.ace (from the SD402) will work when the CVF is accessed directly, but won't work when the CVF is aliased from a different ENG file. Must be something different about the MAKEACE versions they used or something.

Check the "Test cab views" box And it will check for missing textures in that cabview. See whether Conbuilder can find the needle. If it can't as well, then it wouldn't be M$TS' fault.

RE: Hmmmm...

There I go wasting 30 seconds reading your signature again, why can't I ever learn?! Oh, THAT test. Can't remember offhand if I did or not (gonna be 51 on the 24th, got about 3 brain cells left), so out of curiousity I deleted the whole smash, copied the \Cabview folder from the original engine to the 297CAB folder, aliased the same way, and couldn't duplicate - this time the original needleblack.ace aliases just fine.Just another one of them wierd MSTS glitches, probably. I dunno if there's any interest in a Raildriver type cab, but I'm kinda reluctant to upload it unless I know it would work with any engine, so I guess I oughtta ship it off to a few beta testers first.

I am running hi nosed GPs and SDs from three different lines (in both conventional and LHF versions)and each one needs its own .ace to account for the different nose. On the GP cabs the rightside view has in fact been switched so it looks out the rear window as an aid to switching, and that .ace file is also local. Its a good system. Brad Meyer
