I am trying to use the Cab Editor and have a basic problem.I open up a cab view by opening the cvf file. I get the cab view. If I save the file WITHOUT making any changes at all and try to open it again I get a fatal error. Evidently something gets corrupted when the file is saved even when no changes are made. Any help on this please.P.S. I have no problems using the Activity or Route Editors.

Tony: Whether you make changes or not, when you save use the Save As option. In the pop up window the original file name will show, just click Save. Cyndi
Cyndi,THANK YOU for for reply. I found out an interesting thing. I initially selected a gp38 cab to add Bob Artim's signal display. I always get a fatal error even if NO changes are made no matter what save option I use. I found this also to be true on loco cabs that I downloaded from Train-Sim that use the gp38 as a baseline cab. However, I successfully was able to add the display to other cabs with no problems at all. Apparently there is something worng with my baseline gp38 cvf file. I don't know what, and why the locos I downloaded have the same problem since they came with their own cvf file. Anyway, I don't know what to do, to be able to make mods to the gp38 cab since they all result in a fatal error when saved.
Tony: I had some similar problems with cabs. I tried the following and it worked ok. I don't know why it worked. In your cabview folder open the cvf of what you want modify. Print out the section from the top to the Controls line. Open the CE and choose New to create a new cab. Scroll down to cab that you have a print out for and click it. When the new cab screen comes up use the print out to fill in the fields. When done, click OK. When you are back to the cabview do a Save As using a different name and then exit. Copy & paste the rest of the original cvf to your new cvf. Move the original folder to someplace safe or rename it. Rename the new folder to the original folder name. This solved my problems and hopefully it will help you. Cyndi
Cyndi, Thanks again for your reply. I have a basic question when editing files:I open WordPad and open a cvf file. I then open another cvf file. I do a cut and paste between the two files. When saving the file I do a "save as" and specify "unicode text document". I get a message that the formattting will be changed. If I click OK the resulting file becomes a text file with a .txt extension. I know that people must be doing this all the time. Therefore, I must be missing something when doing this. Getting a text file is not correct. Any help here? Thanks.Tony
Tony: When I'm working with a .cvf (not in CE) I highlight the text I want and use COPY. Then go to the other .cvf, put the cursor where I want to copy to and click PASTE. Then click FILE then EXIT. A pop up will ask if you want to save changes, click yes. I do it that way for .eng, .wag, .sms, .wav, .s, .sd, etc. The file is saved with the same name and extension.Cyndi
I seem to recall an issue that if you save while something is selected, it will barf on you. The trick is, how do you unselect something before you save? Create a new item, then delete it. Nothing will be selected, and it's safe to save now.-Jeff
Hello Jeff:Thanks for your reply. You are right about not having anything selected when saving the file. However, I was already aware of this and took the necessary precautions. I have narrowed the problem down to this. When I save the file, even with no changes made, and open the resulting CVF file with wordpad, there are some additional lines of code inserted. I have no idea how they get there and I am sure that they are causing the problem. This only happens with the GP38 cab. BNSF lady has given me some suggestion but so far I have not been able to solve the problem. Thanks again.Tony
