Are steam cabs harder to make than a diesel cab? Or is no one interested in steam anymore? I wonder why diesels impress people more than steam, is steam just too much power for some of you guys? too much noise...Too much GLORY?I mean really, how many kids on your side of the street know how to run a steam locomotive like I do, or the 5 other kids in the universe. BTW, IM NOT BRAGGING AT ALL! Actually, there is ONE more kid at my school that likes steam. And I dont even talk to him because hes a weirdo. I must admit, I do have a disease, as I cant think of anything else but whistle sounds and steam exhaust all day long. I OFTEN, like ALL THE TIME, dream about running a double header up to Cumbres from Chama on the Cumbres & Toltec. The Cumbres is slowly becoming my life. I have already made contact with Kim Flowers, the lady that is basically running the railroad now, and am very proud of myself of THAT!If any of you want to think about steam someday for once, or maybe want to think about getting into them alittle, watch "Last of the Giants". The first sentence that the narrator says is, " For more than a century the haunting voice of the iron horse echoed across the land." "To the eastern seaboard, over the seemingly endless plains and through the western mountains, steam locomotives fused a sprawling landmass into a solid nation." Well I guess thats two sentences. But what great words. The future of myself and John Kelly and others are in your guys' hands. I want to spend the rest of my life with steam in every way possible. First I will go for the Cumbres & Toltec. I will stay there as long as that town shall be there. If it somehow goes, then I will go for the Heber Valley railroad, unless its not aleady gone. The future of steam in this country right now is "fluctuating" and is "unsure of itself". I believe tourist railroads will come back again someday. But it will be awhile. Lets just hope you guys find the interest in steam somehow, great or small. If this post starts up a huge fit, then so be it, and IF it does, then this WILL be the last time you see me on this forum. You guys will know where to find me in 2 years. Kevin Bush,

I will have my hand on the throttle of a K-36 very soon Mon Freunds!

RE: STEAM CAB'S...ETC! Warning, long post about Steam!

Errmmm...What an odd post.Just because you don't see much on this forum about steam cabs in no way means that nobody here is interested in steam.Steam cabs are a bit trickier than diesel. There are more controls to animate for one thing. And most steam loco cabs look drastically different than other steamers, so you basically need to create everything from scratch. Whereas with diesel, cab parts can work in wide range of cabs.Just do like I do. Alias all your steamers to a cab you like.Or, instead of whining about it, learn how to make cabs, and wow us with your brilliance. And yes, the Heber Valley Railroad is still operating.-Jeff

RE: STEAM CAB'S...ETC! Warning, long post about Steam!

Kevin,I hate to disappoint you, but there are those of us out here who also have an interest in diesel-electric locomotives (mainly because that is what we grew up with -- covered wagons, Centennials, etc.). At the same time, we have maintained a professional interest in both types of motive power. It is unfortunate is that there are egomaniac foamers out there who think they can "talk the talk" without anything to back it up! What we look for in the steam-preservation area are people with more interest in learning the trade and passing it to the next generation, than in bragging about it.My hat is off to the simulation people who continuously strive to perfect the physics, the appearance and the overall positive experience to be had with simulation. My hat is also off to those in the real world (such as Kim Flowers, the Friends of the C&TS and many others)who dedicate so much to preserve the artifacts and treasures out there. You probably don't realize that some of us enjoy the "release" of simulation (it is a hobby, after all), to go along with the day-to-day grind of keeping the real machines running, so that others may experience the enjoyment of operating and riding behind vintage steam and diesel locomotives. To think that anyone who puts forth the effort to simulate something more modern a steam locomotive is somehow inferior, is nothing less than offensive. I just hope you acquire some maturity before you come West to knock at our door -- otherwise, you'll be sorely disappointed by the reception you'll get in Utah!Just enjoy the hobby, check your ego at the door, and quit putting your foot in your mouth! With regards,Craig H. RE: STEAM CAB'S...ETC! Warning, long post about Steam!

Man did I get told off, wow!I am sorry for that guys. A guy at my work the day I posted that, said to me he wanted to get his kids a trainset in HO but they like steam, and he hates steam, so he just doesn't buy them one. I told him that the reason they like steam is because it is more impressive and more fun to watch run on a layout. He said he HATES them and that steam is a lost cause. I immediatley came back that I plan to spend the rest of my life with steam locomotives, no matter WHAT it takes. Somehow I will find a way. no matter what pay, I will be happy.
I felt like knocking his teeth out...Craig, Tell John Rimmasch I said hello!Kevin Bush,

RE: STEAM CAB'S...ETC! Warning, long post about Steam!

Kevin,I can understand the reason for your consternation. However, there is room in the hobby for people of all sorts of interests. That's the great thing about the new field of simulation -- you don't have to love trains, motive power or any other specific aspect of railroading! As with model railroading, simulation is a vehicle whereby someone with technical expertise (e.g. computer programming, scenery, landscape art, graphics, ray-tracing, physics, etc.) can have a great time developing his or her talent or capability. Many of the people developing simulation may have little background (or direct interest) in flying or railroading -- however, their expertise (which the rest of us may not have) does terrific things for these programs. It's up to the rest of us to build upon what they have started and then perfect the art.In the tourist-railroad business, it is necessary to appeal to the masses in order to pay the bills and keep the locomotives operating. Appealing to the masses requires patience, compromise, diplomacy and subtle persuasion. We can't be seen as off-centered fanatics (although we have a sometimes-fanatical interest in the subject) if we are going to remain successful in preserving and perpetuating the trade. Be patient with your associate(s) and use a different approach to convincing him that "steam is his friend". As with selling cars, get him to "feel the leather", or get up close and personal to a live steam engine. Once the bug is caught, it's a tough one to cure!Good luck, and once again, just enjoy the hobby and don't worry too much about what others think.Craig
