I'm rendering a cab created within 3D Canvas, using POV-Ray, but I'm having some trouble with the lighting. As main light source in my scene I use an Area light (generates nice shadows). Problem is, when I move the area outside the cab, the shadows inside suddenly show 'bands' instead of a nice smooth shade (the same as in this topic: http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID10/186.html ). Moving the light back inside brings back the smooth shadows. Anyone an idea what the problem could be? Cas

RE: Area light in POV-Ray

The simplest solution would be to increase the number of point sources in the area light definition. From the 9 or 10 it appears you're using, to 45-50. Use the old setup for test renders, then kick up the horsepower for the final render. And make absolutely sure Jitter is enabled on the area light. Move the light a lot further from the cab model, as well.
Also, make sure your desktop bitdepth is set to 32-bit. Modern graphics cards won't even miss a step at 32-bit... 16-bit is for people with Voodoo 3 cards . I mention this because POV-Ray defaults to 24-bit image quality; and if you're showing a 24-bit image on a 16-bit desktop, Windows is hacking and pruning the color quality.
