On some railroads, the conductor is supposed to call the signal indications to the engineer as they come into view. Would there be any way to represent this in MSTS?What I'm proposing here would be some sort of an indicator which would select and play sound files (recordings of a conductor making the signal calls) based on the next signal indication (basically a cab signal with sound instead of lights). Based on what little investigation I've done so far, it looks like it may be possible to do this by hacking the .eng, .cvf, and *cab.sms files for a given locomotive. What I'm having trouble with is figuring out how these files all interact with each other. As an extension, would it be possible to trigger the emergency brake for a stop signal if the train is above a certain speed (simulating the conductor pulling the emergency brake lever on his side of the cab)?Has anyone attempted any research in this area? If so, please post any findings. It would add a lot to the realism of MSTS if we could simulate a second person in the cab...
Personally, I think the signal announcement thing would get annoying after a while.Have you tried the "cab radio chatter" sound file in the library? It wouldn't quite simulate a second person in the cab, but would add some general rail radio ambience to the experience.I haven't tried it myself since I have a scanner and I monitor the real thing, but I know some people love it.I think the brake application could be interesting though.-Jeff
Well, I'm prepared to say a simple no to the possibility of signal related sounds. This would require a sound trigger being activated which varied with the signal aspect. Then these triggers would have to be available to the 'cab' environment of the SMS. (There is one trigger which is activated by the change of a semiphore signal, but this is only available to the 'world' environment of the SMS) .All these aspects of the sim seem to be hard coded as there are no editable files that I have ever heard about or come across which contain these relationships.
