Hey everyone, I'm a cab design rookie and I just downloaded GMAX. I was wondering is there anywhere where I can find a tutorial about can design in Gmax? If anyone has any info that'd be great. Thanks.
Someone please chime in and correct me if this is wrong, but my understanding is that GMAX lacks the camera, lighting and rendering capability of the full-fledged ($$$) Discreet products. If so, that means you may be able to build the cab in GMAX but you can't visualize it, i.e. convert it into all of the requisite bitmaps. You can, however do as others have done successfully - build your cab in 2D space. Start with a photograph of an actual cab, or a modified version of someone else's cab (with their permission of course) and overlay your controls using ones that come with MSTS or ones you make yourself.FYI a general procedure for building a cab in 3D appeared here... http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID10/41.htmlSee also the MSTS Techdoc "How to Make Cab Bitmaps 1.01.doc"Rick G PDX
>. . .GMAX lacks the camera, lighting and >rendering capability of the full-fledged ($$$) Discreet >products. . .That is correct. 3DCanvas can be used as a lower-cost alternative to 3DSMax etc. for cab-building. You can achieve near photoreal ray-tracings with 3DC (http://www.amabilis.com) in conjunction with the free raytracer POVRay (http://www.povray.org).
There is a cab tutorial on this page written by Ian Morgan, who has written some excellent tutorials for 3dc. I just barely got through printing it out and have not yet had a chance to read it so I can not attest as to how good it will be. The website in question was working just fine last night, but when I tried to access it this afternoon I got a cannot find server message. I am going to post the link anyways in the hope that things should work a little later. http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/tutorials/index.html Good luck.

Thanks for plugging my tutorial. It actually uses a photo of a real cab as a basis, rather than screenshots of a 3D model, but it does give an insight into what has to be done once you have created a model. It is also available from http://www.uktrainsim.com as the Aussie site seems to be still having problems.Ian
