Cab editing is completely a mystery to me, or cab design for that matter. But a few months ago I started using Dekosofts GP40-2. The cab on these engines are excellent. As realistic as I,ve seen yet. The default GP38-2 cab is a fluk. There is no engineer that sits in the drivers seat and looks out the middle window, and has all his controls directly in front of him! Now all these geeps I have d\l'd want me to copy these ridiculous cabs to run on an otherwise beautiful locomotive. My question is, is it possible to use the cab from my Dekosoft Geeps and replace\intertwine with the locos that need a copied cab?

RE: replacement cabs/cab sharing

Yes, there's a couple ways to do this. One is place a copy of Dekosofts "Cabview" folder within the folder of the loco you want to use that cab with. Then edit the "Cabview" line in the .eng file to point to the new dekosoft .cvf file. This is the easiest way, but uses more space on your hard drive in the long run if you do many engines this way.The other way is to create a Common.Cab folder and alias the .eng files "Cabview" lines to point at the folder. Example of what your "Cabview" code line might look like with this approach:( " ../../Common.Cab/Deko/cabviewname.cvf" )The second approach saves hard drive space because you only place the cabview ONCE and any loco you want to use it alias' it from there. Incidently, once you create a common cab folder, you can place ALL your cab views in there that you use, and use aliasing to access them.I need this cabview you're talking about for my GP30's, 35's, and 38's.Good luck!Andre Ming

Thats sounds doable, but complicated! Can you maybe break that down step-by-step? Id like to try the alias type. But when I do this, will the color of the view of the hood stay the same as the original cabview? You dont have the cabview im talking about? Is there a way I can send it to ya?? Zac

Hm... gotta' leave the computer for a while. Let me think on it.Re: Sharing the cabview - If the model is payware, that wouldn't really be etiquette, and might even be a breach of copywrite. Send me the software site's URL to take a look at their offerings, and if it's something I simply can't live without, I will purchase a basic engine to obtain the file. Later dude!Andre "Coonskin" Ming

Oops. Forgot to answer your color question:Yes, the nose color will stay the same. That is part of the cabview texturing. Thus, whatever engine you place that cabview in will have that nose. It can be repainted via a photoshop, but I take it from your original post, you're not comfortable with that.Andre

RE: replacement cabs/cab sharing

There can be problems aliasing the Deko cabs this way. I have ended up with some very strange things at times. What I do is use one of the newer cabs as most ace files are aliased and there are 1 or 2 ace files that go with it. I just copy these files into the cabview folder and then edit the eng file for the cvf filename. Kevin Arceneaux

RE: replacement cabs/cab sharing

In that case, then here's what you need to do to place the cabview inside each engine of choice:1. Copy the Deko "Cabview" folder into the engine's folder where you want it to appear. Doing this will overwrite the existing Cabview folder, so if you want to hedge your bets, make a back up of the existing Cabview within the target loco's folder.2. Open Deko's "Cabview" folder and see what the filename of the .cvf folder is. Jot it down EXACTLY as it's named.2. Open the target loco's ".ENG" file with WORDPAD (NOT "Notepad"). If you've never opened an .ENG file before, Windows may ask you to select the program you want to open the file with. If so, select WORDPAD. (Again, if you're nervous about doing this, make a back up of your original .ENG file.)Once the .ENG file is opened via WORDPAD, scroll down until you find the codeline for "CabView".It should look something like this: CabView ( "oldfile.cvf" )Now, edit that line with the name of the cab view that's in Deko's Cabview folder you copied to the loco's folder. As an example:CabView ( "newfilename.cvf" )Make sure WORDPAD is set to save in UNICODE and hit SAVE. Don't use SAVE AS, but simply SAVE.Your new cabview should now be in place next time you go to your engine.Repeat the above for each engine you want the cabview to appear in.Good luck!Andre "Coonskin" Ming

Right you are. Just pulled up the default GP38 .eng file to have a look.Guess old habits die hard. Somewhere early into my eng file learning experiences, quotes appeared in someone's file... I've been using them since. Fortunately, the cabview file will still load with the quotes!Good thing, eh?Andre "Coonskin" Ming
