Has anybody realized that even though the TrainArtisan ESE cab is extremely good and works well, it doesn't feel right in say a USRA heavy mikado or a "stock consolidation?" Is there anybody who might be working to remedy this? I haven't done a cab before but I've done lots of research and been in a few cabs, and could offer scanned photographs as aides to anybody brave enough to tackle the project.
That blasted cab editor is worse than the route editor. there were something like 20 finished routes, a couple hundred reskins and activities, and even a few completely new engines and cars uploaded before somebody finally conquered the cab editor and uploaded a custom cab. I've been after these geniuses ("genii?" whatever the plural is) to make a steam cab view that you can actually see where you're going, but since I'm apparently the only one interested I'm finally tackling it myself. After several months off & on here's what I got:So some pics would be cool, the problem I have is twofold; 1. Creating a cab from scratch instead of stealing stuff from the scotsman would probably take me 20 years or so, 2. I'm completely uninterested in the view sitting on the floor of the tender looking up at the backplate. That's NOT what the engineer sees, he sits a lot closer to the front window, so what I'm trying to do is crowd all the fireman's controls over to the left to get them out of the way. I just turn "Clinker" the automatic fireman loose and let him deal with all that anyway, I don't even want to look at it.So I guess that's where all this stands, if somebody who has the know how to build the kind of cab you want isn't interested in it for himself, you just have to bite the bullet and learn the cab editor. Same thing applies to routes, activities, locos & cars, reskins, whatever, unless you get lucky and someone else builds it first, you pretty much have to learn how to hack or live without it. Persistance is the key tho, don't give up cuz you "have no talent for that sort of thing", I don't have any talent either, so I just keep plugging away until I develop some.
Kyle and I are geting ready to jump into the deep end on this ridiculous cab thingy. We are using TrainArtisan's quality as our goal. I plan to fully model the cab in 3d and Kyle will texture it. Then we will be able to animate it with shadows and such.Sniper or SouthernCpl, if you are interested, give me a yell, and once we get the thing a ways along, I'll give you a yell back. I can't think of anyone else around here that is more likely to figure out how to use the cab editor. And further... explain it to us.Here's a fully rendered picture of our cabview.... Just kidding , but it is a picture of the real cab we need to build. NORFOLK & WESTERN Precision TransportationMike Rector mrector@columbus.rr.com
In the meantime you could go to http://mikemad.de He has just released a new cab CAB78 version 3. that should fill your 'gap'.....plus he has some excellent german steamers on there. Well worth a visit. Georges from London.
