Feb-22-02, 11:41 AM (EST) "New message category" Hey Nels,
You're doing a great job with this website and forum. I imagine it is a full time job to keep it running and to arbitrate disputes.Recently, someone suggested a new message category with a title of "Requests" or "Wanted" or something like that. I would like to cast my aye vote for this idea. This would be a place where people could **POLITELY** ask for new projects. This way if someone liked to reskin locomotives, he/she could look here for potential new projects. Anyone posting in this category should not expect immediate results as some projects are very time consuming and some of us have to work for a living to support our railroad habit! Also, I think it would be a good idea for anyone posting in this category to include photos, diagrams, or anthing else that would help in the project. Once someone tackles the project there should be a private dialog by email between the requestor and the "doer" on the details of the project. You know, I just realized that my suggestions in the paragraph above could be the start of a FAQ. I know this forum has been self-policing with little or no intervention on your part and that is great. However a FAQ might help keep things organized and help newcomers with their posts.Just some rambling thouhts. If you like the FAQ idea, I would be very happy to help develop it.Keep up the good work.Cal Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Most developers seem to have no shortage of projects to work on and I've noticed many seem to take suggestions (and often they sound more like demands) as an intrusion.Setting up a place like this would certain increase the number of suggestions being made and I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

Perhaps if requests were archived or removed after one week's time. Or any requests not in the request forum were removed all together. There'd have to be something like that done to prevent the volume from getting out of hand...which would mean more work for you nels (ugh)

Feb-22-02, 03:22 PM (EST) 3. "RE: New message category" Hi It was me that suggested that maybe a wanted forum thread was the way to go.
I am from the U.K. and regularly check out the forums at www.uktrainsim.com why not have a peep yourselves and see what I mean, it does seem to work pretty well but as calr says it does take a while to do research find plans and photos and then actualy build and skin a model so dont expect a by return service.
Also as Nels pointed out many developers have many plans of their own which will probably keep them busy all year!, but one or two will be willing to take a request or two or move a planned project up the priority order.CheersIan J Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-22-02, 04:44 PM (EST) 4. "RE: New message category" I like the Idea. I often post in the wanted forum at UKTRAINSIM.com, but I never I expect someone to actually build something for me. Its often just a good way to get an interesting thread going and people can discuss similar needs or even point you in the right direction if they already have one, or know of something that would meet the requirements.I'm a route builder (part time anyway) and Im working on the route that I want to build, I wouldn't dream of building the Paris Metro , for example, simply because someone wanted me to, but I have no objection reading those threads and even replying if I have some useful information or an opinion to make. This is a hobby and I appreciate every little bit of the wonderfully detailed trains, routes, objects, utilities and even advice that has been made available for free. Nothing is taken for granted. I also believe that it never hurts to ask because you never know where it might lead. I also understand there are some users here that are a little too demanding in their tone when when 'requesting' items be created for them. They see sites such as this one as a service, not a meeting point, but I expect all of them are in their early teens and have yet to learn the finer points of polite discourse. One of the problems of these sites (though some may consider it an advatage) is that no one knows anything about you (I'm a 25 year old British male by the way). No one here is forcing anyone to do anything, MSTS is, after all is said and done, merely a form of entertainment, and therefore the only obligation should be to have fun.On the behalf of those that might agree with me. I vote Yes.Cheers, Mike. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
