Feb-22-02, 09:28 AM (EST) "Downloads, the Site, etc..." The very nature of the site as another poster in another message thread put it is a "gift horse"... A person can pay to join or not and there are downloads that are free (shareware you do have to pay for after the date or to get all the benefits of the software) provided you stay true to the documentation files, an incredible wealth of information from other people on a global scale who for the most part are willing to help you out in nearly every area dealing with train sims and some cases beyond.
Think of all those files, the space needed for storage, the bandwidth, the server(s), the upkeep-servicing, debugging, the electricity, the human component, the relatively few ads anywhere. That all costs time and money.Yeah, I had trouble downloading Sea View, my first try took nearly all night and it ended up having errors because my comp froze in the middle of it. That was a nightmare. My frustration level was high, because I really wanted that file.I'm very grateful for what train sim provides to me and to others, grateful for the artistry and skill of those here and the knowledge that is shared.I also understand that many cannot afford to 'pay' the fee here, well sites like train sim generally have banners on them and get a small bit of revenue from advertisers when people click on them and visit the sites. It's not a whole lot of money, but it does help keep the site going, the upkeep of the servers, etc. So click on the banners...

Feb-22-02, 01:27 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Downloads, the Site, etc..." I paid the fee, $30. I still get lousy download times with 5min. long timeouts and files being corrupted after downloaded.Gift horse? More like rip-off.But I'm hoping that with my $30 payment, Nels will now have the money to fix everything! Steve

Feb-22-02, 02:05 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Downloads, the Site, etc..." I am a paid member and have never had a problem down loading add on equipment and/or programs. I must also mention that I am on a cable hook up which makes life a lot easier for down loading purposes versus dial up modems. On those occasions that I have had problems Nel's has been more than accomodating in providing me help or good counsel!

Feb-25-02, 08:41 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Downloads, the Site, etc..." a few months back, the site had to move to a new server, and since then all the downloads have suffered, its something we will have to deal with unfortunatly, until nels finds a solution.
