Today is the first day that the Three Rivers will not run to Chicago, it will end in Pittsburgh where anyone who wants to go to Chicago must switch to the Capitol Limited (At 10PM no less ).

RE: Three Rivers Cut to Pittsburgh

The mail and express was quite a drag on Amtrak. It was something that G. Warrington set up to perfect "the glideslope to profitability". As a frequent rider, having made several trips through Chicago, and having missed one connection (guaranteed though) because of it taking 1 hour to get the crud off the rear of the Capitol Ltd. out at 14th St. or wherever that wye is, I salute D. Gunn for dumping it. Mail and Express would be fine, if it could be loaded and unloaded without delaying the passengers like it was done 40 years ago, but when it interferes with the basic mission of Amtrak it needed to go.
Now the problem is politics. Our elected pres. wants to scrap the whole shebang - let it go bankrupt - and - it will emerge leaner and meaner -- and just maybe -- profitable. No, won't work Bushy, all you are doing is killing passenger trains so that those of us who prefer that mode of travel won't have a choice and so the highway, arline, and petrol. interests that funded your campaigne just might make a little more money.
Having commented on mail and express though, I hate to see the 3-Rivers, or any LD train get the axe. If Amtrak survives in some form, it will be found to be much harder to put on a train, than to kill an existing one.J. H. Sullivan
