Huh?! The last I heard was they ditched the idea of putting up a fence along the right of way. now this! WTF do they think their doing!? The WM is a part of the states history and they want to get rid of it! Jeez...

Well the WMSR is owned by the state, and they figure that by converting the row to a trail, the hikers will have to spend money for things like lodging, food, etc which means MD will see more money.It hasn't been outright said, but I think liability is a big factor as well. You many remember Ridgley W Va residents complaining about smoke and all that, MD figures if they get rid of that big, dangerous, problem causing train, residents along the row will not have anything to complain about saving them from lawsuits caused by the rr.Damn shame-Jeffrey

I live in Cumberland, and I find this to be a pile of bullshit. As a person who's experiancing this first hand, I must say that if WMSR goes under, The last of a great frieghtline will be left to rot, and go to ruins. I heard it all started just because a few people in WV didn't like the smoke from the steam engine, so guess what, WMSR was forced to have a diesel put in the rear of the train so that it could pull the train back to Cumberland since they had to powerdown the steam engine so her smoke won't bother the poepl of WV. I just find this a bunch of bullshit. HELP SAVE WMSR! WRITE TO YOUR LEGISLATURE!

Isn't the MD legislature majority Democrat?(at least last I'd heard it was)If that's the case you've got an unholy alliance of NIMBY's,ecotwits and glory grabbing greenie weenie lefty political types that want to get rid of those nasty polluting steam engines(and of late the diesel power plant has come on to the ecotwit hit list as well)and put in a bike path(remember steam or internal combustion: EVIL!!! bikes,walking and other ecotwit approved activities: GOOD)of course the NIMBYs(forget the fact that the tracks were there long before them)will be quiet for a bit and then begin bitching about the bikers and hikers near their property.
As for the political types (1) they score points with the ecotwit base and(2)They look fiscally responsable by cutting that waste of state funds(of course the savings will be flushed down some lefty approved rathole such as making sure Willie the Wino has a state funded bottle of MD 20/20 and a state funded warm place to drink himself to death in.)Gary S

Damn it! They just finished a meeting in Frostburg and the disition was made. The route is to be shut down. I knew they canceled the fenced off track plan, and now I know why. It's a sad day for the WMSR.Jason Underwood
