Did a bit of dog catching the other day and he had to go get a QAVNL
south of Pine Bluff. Now the train had four units, we didnt know two of the units were bad order. So shucks we still get on the train
and we only have two units. While the engineer checks out the engines I glanc at the paperwork. The QAVNL was only 13,500 tons and 8800ft, 158 cars. WTF????? Well since the Monroe sub is relatively flat they run em huge like that with two units. We took off and we got up to 38, thats as fast as we got. Coming up Carruthers Hill we got down to 8 mph but they kept on chugging. The whole time I was praying that we didnt get a knuckle. Upon arrival at NLR we had to sit for a few hours because we were too big and no tracks were availible. Finally two tracks opened up and I had to double the train over to the next rail. All in all no problems. We then took the power to the house. The EMD's didnt let me down while the GE's went to sleep. Here is the power at the #1 rail at the roundhouse. I saluted the 4843 because they didnt let us down. One Happy Conductor – image 2

RE: One Happy Conductor

GE's doin' what they do best! Is the lead unit one of UP's new SD70Ms with the control stand instead of the desktop controls? The newer ones have the notched-nose like that one has, IIRC.

Nope, thats one of the first ones with the new nose (4837-4849). They have the desktop style control stand.

I think the crew of CSX L415 would disagree slightly...This morning at 6am, L145 stalled at the bottom of the grade near Buck Lodge because their lead unit, an SD60M decided to quit.Somehow they got it moving again, but I find it interesting how that the engine that was only 10 years old decides to fail, while the other power (an SD40, RDMT, GP40-2, and SD40R) which is considerably older never gave them a fit. -Jeffrey

The older stuff was still EMD, though.
