Woa, I looked at Motive Power's website and it almost looked like the engine could be a pull start! The thing is baisically an electric switcher with a small generator that runs when required, and a butt-load of battries! Im speechless, and slightly disgusted... But this is very good for the envirement, guess im a traditionalist (hope thats the right word).

RE: UP Green Goat

I don't think it looks too bad, the UP paint scheme is nicer than the demo, and it looks better with the taller hood.

RE: UP Green Goat

Exactly...It doesn't look really bad, but I'd much rather see a GP38-2 than one of those.

RE: UP Green Goat

I think it looks cool. I think all the safety striping is for safety (remember this is electric). It's gotta be pretty quiet. This could also be good for those living near the yard. Myself I like the noise but not everyone does.Innovation is where it's at for any industry the ability to think outside the box. I can remember when diesel was ruining all those steam engines. Who wants to hear what is essentially a truck engine when you can listen to the symphony that is a steam locomotive. This is also a trend to the California Emitions requirements. There are several new designs in the works for this reason. Alternative fuel versions and the like. It's a big challenge for a railroad that was the biggest user of coal to move to diesel it will be even a bigger move away from diesel to something else.Ronson2k4

I like it, also. As others have said, anything which is good for our evnvironment has to be cheered on - especially if it makes the air easier to breath.I'm also pleased to see something Canadian getting attention - long may they prosper!cheersJohn

Besides, the noisy rumble of a diesel locomotive is minor compared to the banging of boxcars and some of the other noises that come from a rail yard. I live about a half of a mile from a yard. The main noise I hear is the horn at the crossings when the train rumbles southbound out of the yard onto the main line. (On a quiet night I can occasionally hear the locos if I listen closely.)Cheers for the Green Goat!

RE: UP Green Goat

It's not a safety problem for those that live nearby. Those that are working about the yard may not hear it coming. I live about 5 blocks from a large yard. It's always pretty noisy despite it being maybe a 1/2 mile away. If there are noisy that are let's say competing with that of a quiet locomotive from the brakemen point of view they have to keep an eye out. I don't mind the noise at all. If I could live closer to the tracks I would. They may have something on the locomotive that they use as a warning (bell or warning sound).I remember seeing a story of a guy that invented a way to use "kitchen waste" - used cooking oil in a diesel locomotive. The only problem would be the infastructure to get the oil to the locomotive. YOu can imagine a locomotive that is as noisy as a regular loco but smells like french fries as it drives by... "Would you like a burger with them fries"?Ronson2k4

I think it looks rather nice compared to the demonstrator colors.
