I use to haul strawberries out of Oxnard, and know that inersection well. Strawberries pay a great deal of money too, almost 2-3 times more than normal produce such as lettuce, apples, etc. For what it is worth, the truck stalled on the tracks. That video is quite impressive.Chris Bogley

After seeing the video from both sides of the track I thought it was very strange that someone actually caught that.It turns out that thee was a motorist trying to prove how dangerous that intersection is and had a video setup going and would videotape things every time the train came. Apparently the traffic lights werenot set upproperly at the intersection, causing traffic to get stuck on the tracks when the trains approached.I did hear from another Amtrak engineer that they lady engineer who was operating the train when the accident happened IS okay, just shaken up a bit. Thank heaven for that!!

After all the previous incidents of trains getting derailed after hitting cars, this sure is a twist and shows the power of trains!

-----You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!-----
Or probably, maybe you should waste your time reading it.
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not to waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

Yea just saw this on the morning news. From both camera angles the truck did two mistakes.Went across the tracks without a clear intersection to clear the tracks and when the light turned after getting held for the light should have gone through into the intersection to clear.I put over 50% blame on the driver and thats with myself having over 28yrs on the road driving from Alaska to California

Awesome video. But Shoskins, regardless of how screwed up the traffic lights are,you should never stop on the tracks.Period.

Thank God it wasn't the cab car like in the Metrolink accident. It may have been much worse than just an F59 smashing through a truck and just having parts fly everywhere.I put 100% of the blame on the truck driver. He wasn't on the tracks, and even if he was, he shoulda just kept on going - It would have been obvious to him that his trailer was on the tracks. If he doesn't get sued by Amtrak or somebody who got hurt, I'd be very, VERY amazed. They have the video to prove this guy is a moron!Joe LeMay

RE: Nice train vs. semi video at CNN.com

Hey..I agree to a point on the stupidity of the truck driver. Stupid to the point of stopping the cab of the truck on the tracks at a green light anticipating that traffic would be moving soon. The truck did not stall on the tracks.

If you notice in the video, the crossing gate came down on the right side of her sleeper. She then moved her truck forward and stopped with the trailer on the tracks. She should have kept going through the intersection. Here comes Amtrack and obliterates the trailer and the load. It would have been a very different situation if the trailer contained hazardous materials. At least she was smart enough to move the truck forward, that manuever probably saved her life. If you noticed, the tractor remained on all 10 wheels and rocked a little after the train cleaned up the trailer. You never stop a vehicle, especially a large truck on the tracks. Every professional driver knows this. Apparently, some of us are more professional than others. You never know when a train is going to come along. I am a driver of a large reefer truck. I drive all lower 48 states and Canada. I never stop my truck on the tracks at a stop light, green or red. Or any intersection with tracks running through it.ChuckChckhbrt@yahoo.com

RE: Nice train vs. semi video at CNN.com

Do you Amtrak could afford to take part in a staged accident?? No, If it was stage, find the driver of than train and charge him with attempted murder, one account for every person on the train and evry person at the intersection. Also nail the num-nuts who placed the video cameras.
Top it all off, they wasted a good oad of strawberries!!

You know , when i first heard this, I heard that it was staged and that the cameras were there specifically for this.It was to prove that the trains were goin to fast through this part of town.

RE: Nice train vs. semi video at CNN.com

Take a good hard look, folks. The semi was stopped behind a pickup truck. The traffic light turned green, and both the pickup and the semi started to pull up into the intersection. The crossing gates started to come down while the traffic light was still green, and when the semi driver reacted to the light turning red at the intersection and stopped, the semi was trapped between the barriers. Both the pickup truck and the tractor of the semi were stopped inside of the highway stop lines, a clear violation of the highway code. The regs require that the crossing control devices and highway signal devices be properly interfaced so that any train entering the track circuit will preempt the highway signal sequence and turn the traffic lights red in all directions simultaneously. It takes 6 seconds for the barriers to descend. With predictive warning systems which are capable of giving a 20-second warning for crossings irrespective of train speed, any tractor-trailer combination in excess of 20000 lbs all-up weight will be incapable of accelerating clear of the crossing from a dead stop before the locomotive arrives if train speed is greater than 50 MPH, which it was in this case. Truckers react to situations through training, experience, and instinct, and in heavy traffic situations at low speed, the natural reaction is to stop, which can get you killed if you are crossing railway tracks. For those who think that trains cannot be derailed by a semi-trailer rig,I have proof positive that it can happen. I have seen a crossing accident where a flatbed semi rig loaded with softwood lumber got hit by a 7000-ton freight train pulled by an SD75I and a Dash 9 going 55 MPH derailed on impact, injuring the crew members. The impact rolled the SD75 over and the trailing Dash 9 got totally cleaned for half its' length along the top deck, wrecking the engine and compressor space, basically scrapping the locomotive. Over 20 cars derailed, including a pressure tank car loaded with chlorine gas, which fortunately did not leak despite the severe damage it took. Take it from me folks, trains and heavy trucks are not made to occupy the same space at the same time at crossings. And this is just a single incident. Take a good look at some of the NTSB and TSB of Canada accident report available online.
