Count on the media to screw up the story, as usual...The train was broadsided by a logging truck....in broad daylight...at a signallized crossing. All 9 cars are on the ground as a result, although it appears that the only car with any sort of major damage is the baggage car, which took the direct hit.The only one with serious injuries is the truck driver, who had to be cut out of the wreckage, with some head and midsection injuries. He's pretty foretunate to be alive, although I hope he gets slapped with charges when released.DanEveryone is entitled to their opinion no matter how wrong it is.

It's a good thing the truck hit the baggae car and not the coach behind it or this would be much worse. It's also a good thing that ridership is relatively low on VIA 1/2 this time of year.Hopefully the HEP equipment isn't too badly damaged, I get the impression that VIA's HEP equipment is stretched pretty thin...

Mike, I believe they were 6441 and 6447.Dave, some of the HEP equipment is stretched pretty thinly...the Skylines and Diners in the summer particularly...but since the partial conversion of the Ocean to Ren's, that isn't nearly as much of a problem as it has been in past years.DanEveryone is entitled to their opinion no matter how wrong it is.

Actually the truck ran into the second unit. Guess the driver "didn't see the train", flashing lights, etc. cheers,

What kind of idiot would do something like this? Is he in a damn hurry or he didn't see the crossing? What's a few second for a speedy passenger train to pass the crossing and you may proceed? It's almost like what happened in Bourbannias, Illinois in March 1999 where truck tried to beat the Amtrak's "city of New Orlean" train at crossing and there were 11 people killed. Luckly, but no fatalies here in this VIA crash and thank goodness everyone walks from this one except for the trucker, well he had to be airlifted to nearby hospital.Ken Plaza

RE: VIA Rail Derailment

I notice one of the news articles called the train "The Canadian". I thought The Canadian disappeared when CP and CN passenger services merged into Via. Anyone know what's up with that?Cheers,

RE: VIA Rail Derailment

Nope I am not sure what days, but VIA runs 3 Eastbounds (2) and 3 Westbounds (1) a week.In the summer it gets near or maybe even gets to 30 coaches and 3 units.
