KCS orders 30 SD70ACe – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Jan-26-05 AT 11:59 AM (EST)

This was posted on the Railspot yahoogroup, and it was taken from the KCS News website."KCSR to purchase 30 new SD70ACe locomotives
Last week, KCSR agreed to purchase 30 new SD70ACe locomotives from
the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors Corporation (GM) to be
delivered in fourth quarter 2005. In 2004, GM offered KCSR a 75-day, free trial of two, new SD70ACe locomotives. The same demonstration units will be returned to KCSR in January at no charge and be returned back to GM upon delivery of the new units. The primary benefit of the new SD70ACe is that it can pull 9.6 percent more 110-ton coal cars than any of the locomotives currently in KCSR's fleet."

what is this now?let's see here
100 for UP
25 for CSX
52 for NS (DC transmissions)
15 for some Aussie outfit
16 for MRL and now this?hey that would be good for EMD, but with the sale on the horizon I wonder how much of a difference it'll make

>Tier 2 loco? IIRC the 265H is already Tier-2 compliant. I would assume its because it is a four stroke rather than EMD's traditional two stroke design.I've always somewhat been a fan of the 265H only because it uses Antifreeze so the locomotives can be shut down in the winter, thus polluting less and saving fuel, which leads into saving money.

The 265H was always intended to be EMD's Tier II compliant prime mover. It's just not reliable enough to be used in daily service just yet though.DanEveryone is entitled to their opinion no matter how wrong it is.

I dont hate GE's( it just gets boring watching CSX,UP and BNSF trains when all they have on the trains are dash 9's or Ac4400CW's) but EMD's are the best in my opinion.Proof is that the GE's U30c's got retired way before some sd40's and SD45's! Just my two cents Sheesh!Alec

Problems were caused by EMD pushing the envelope of the 645 powerplant.Excessive stress and vibrations were caused by EMD trying to get more power out of powerplant that was having a hard time reaching it.Railroads that had GP/SD 50 models had to send the units in for amjor overhauls because of this and the powerplant had to be redesigned.Claude Debnam NS Piedmont Division Raleigh EastKCS orders 30 SD70ACe – image 28

I would say the thing that realy hurt EMD was the SD45. after spending so much money on SD45s the railroads where a little worried about the quality and reliabilty EMD. GE jumped on thier chance to gain market share and hasn't looked back since. My question is why is EMD going back to the 70 series, did they get too far ahead of themselves with the SD80s and SD90s?Just down the road from the CSX/NS Buckeye Yard.

The SD45 was actually quite popular model, if you include all versions....SD45
SD45P
SDF45
SDFP45
SD45-2
SD45-2BRemember that the SD45 was launched in 1967. It wasnt until the early 80's when EMD started to loose lots of business thanks to the reliability of the SD50/GP50 (16-645F3) as mentioned above. Besides, the SD45 was essentially powered by a 20 cylinder 645E3. The SD40's have a 16-645E3.>Mike Forster<

Early SD45's were plauged by a variety of ailments, not the least of which were breaking crankshafts (Hmmm....where have I heard that before on a V20...). They sold lots of units sure, but look at how many of them are still around with V20's....not too many.By the time the Dash-2 program rolled around, many railroads were weary of the V20's despite the fact that EMD had sorted out the vast majority of their issues, and so the 45-2 didn't even come close to the numbers built that the 40-2 did.DanEveryone is entitled to their opinion no matter how wrong it is.

But they Already have 308 SD9043MACs in the 8000 Series. They also have 60 SD90MACs in the 8500 series (6000 HP Versions 40 of them with the new nose). From what I have heard the SD70ACEs will be in the 8300-8400 series takeing over where the SD9043MAC left off at. I am still waiting and wanting to see one of these in the UP Yellow with the Wings on the front.

The order for 52 SD70M-2's for NS has been confirmed. The number block will be 2649-2700.I have been told that NS doesn't like the new ES40DC's they are testing and that is the reason the order is all EMD this year.
