The proposed photoban from long ago seems to have returned.

New Yorkers: write to your borough president/councilman/Mayor Bloomberg/MTA officials to speak out against the photoban.

This photo ban is not going to help the present situation at all, in fact, it could just make it worse. Just putting bans in photogrpahy because of terrorists is just like saying that the terrorists have won. Plus, say if the "Doe Family" who knows nothing of the photo ban, wants a picture of the subway that took them to "Insert station here", gets arrested and has their camera and film taken away (I'd die if that happened to me), sues the MTA for $40 Million.

You know, they may have put a ban on noticable cameras and such.. but there is always Camera Phones.. do tell me.. what are they going to do about those? Ban the use of cell phones in a mile distance of all transit? Haha, never going to happen. One thing about the camera phone is that nowadays they can hold up to 200 pics, and they can ALL be sent off to some central location... smart terrorist will use those if it comes down to it..

RE: PHOTOGRAPHY IN DANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!

What it all boils down to is being seen to "do something" when in reallity there isn't really much that can be done.AT least up here in Canada we haven't yet been subjected to such foolishness yet - I get a quite friendly response from railway personnel when I'm photographing or just watching trains (some of you may remember the shots I published here last year relating to a bridgen installation on CP tracks in Whitby).Watching from outside, one cannot help wondering whether U.S.A. is gradually ceasing to be a democracy, and may be turning into another police state - though further response to that comment would be more appropriate in a different forum, and the state of democracy in Canada is far from perferct, also.Cheers, and a Merry Christmas to you allJohn

>...the Yankee's! YUCK!I hear ya To keep this on topic, no matter what we do to prevent terrorists, They'll find some evil way to continue on with their plot (unless we make just about everything illegal and people will think it's Nazi Germany all over again) , a photography ban WON'T DO ANYTHING. I've been a railroad photographer for 5 years, have had photos in magazines and railpictures.net, and I'm not going to let a PHOTO BAN screw up MY HOBBY (though I won't go breaking any laws to do so).Sorry for some of the caps near the end, this photo ban issue is one that angers me...

Cameras, deter terrorists and other crime. Not only is this ineffective, it is counterproductive. The proposal is the product of stunning incompetence.

Perhaps do as they have done in theaters in France -- jam them!! Then there would be no reason to have one's phone out in the subway. That way it would be easy to spot violators of "The Government knows what best for you" act.Brad Meyer

I think a poto ban could hurt security. The authories will be busy enforcing it while other potentially dangerous people might be ignored.

I think the Photo ban is too fascist and I wont stand for it. If I get arrested for taking a picture on the Subway, I will take this all the way to the US Supreme Court (If I have too). This is about as stupid as when Greece made Video Games Illegal with the intent to curb illegal gambling.

I don't know then. I could very well happen the they have been for the past few years there. I would have to pray for a good civil defence lawyer, that is all I can do Brad, the then the "forever" Appeal process, you know how long that takes.

If this ban were to be put into effect, (God forbid), all you'd recieve is a summons, which you can beat in court at the present moment, or a fine of $25.

Okay, now the NYPD has gone too far!
http://www.subchat.com/read.asp?Id=33662
A photographer was taking pictures of LIRR equipment FROM A PUBLIC SIDEWALK in Jamaica, Queens and was brought to a police station and questioned. It also appears that Governor Pataki is coming out against the photoban, and he has a lot of influence with the MTA. That is the only bit of good news we've had recently.

P.....oooorrrrrrk! Did they bug you for taking that picture? Looks like they're just socializing, not protecting the subway. Just today I took a picture of a Metra and got a strange look from a collector standing around.BTW, no grudges against anyone, there are nice cops around too.

No, they didn't bug me for taking their picture. In fact, alot of people were doing the same thing. The cops slinked away after the group came, but we found them later on the (L) train platform. I believe it's OK for them to socialize, because 14th St Union Square has a police station within fare control. There were cops everywhere we went, but not one of them dared to stop and question anybody. Some of us tried taking pictures of cops within the police station, but they hid their heads behind desks and papers. And remember: "When the SWAT team arrives--run."

Ok I'm sorry about that. This is partly what happens if I've had nothing to do for two weeks. I understand it must get extremely boring. My uncle was a marshal which must be worse because he's at a desk more than anything.

RE: PHOTOGRAPHY IN DANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the UK the only rule against transport photography is on the Underground, where flash photography is banned. Doesn't stop many staff making up anti photography rules though. A rarther amusing recent incident was at one station where me and a load of others had just arrived on a railtour. At first one member of staff tried to stop people photgraphing, but when faced with about a hundered rail enthusiasts he quickly disapered. I've never had police trying to stop me photographing though, the two times I've had police trouble on stations I've not even had chance to get my camera out, but was just standing on the end of the platform waiting for a train. Suprisingly though I've often stood on the ends of main station in London and never once had trouble, all the trouble I've had has been at smaller stations in other cities. The only problems I've had in London have been to do with flash photography, twice where their was no rules against it, and once on the underground where I didn't use the flash (it was above ground, in the middle of a bright spring day). I have heard some pretty bad stories from people though, and some stations have pretty much been blacked by enthusiasts due to so many problems (although 3 of the top 10 worst are regular spots of mine, and only one have I ever had trouble at (its so bad that almost every visit has included at least a warning not to use flash photography, even if I wasn't, or not to stand on the end of the platform, and even got told off by one person for taking photos on the last day that the station was open before it closed for a massive refurbishment. Interestingly though, I've used the temporary replacement station a few times, and each time have broken all the "rules", yet have never had problems, which is a shame since the temporary station isn't anything like as good a backdrop for photos than the old one so I wouldn't mind as much.
