To the left of the train number are symbols. The trains with a "M" indicate Metroliner Service, The train numbers are in the 100 or 200 series. As for the trains themselves, Metroliners usually run with no more than 6 cars while the regionals are longer.

I think Metroliners are only New York or Boston to Washington, where as the regionals extend further south to Newport News and perhaps further south into the Carolinas.Chris Bogley

All Regionals and Metroliners train numbers are three digits. An “M” preceding the train number designates a train as a Metroliner; they run between NYC and DC, one might still be Philly –DC. As stated before, they run six cars. This ensures maximum number of passengers while remaining light enough to ensure quick acceleration to top speed. Other three digit train numbers designate the Regionals, like the slower and bigger DC to Boston trains, Clockers, Keystone Service (600’s), Newport News VA, and Springfield MA service. These range from 3 (Keystone Service) to 12 cars, the number depends on the type of service and time of year. Service to Springfield MA and points south of DC like Newport News and Richmond require motive power changes, so they do not rate express designations, hence cheaper prices for tickets. TWO and single digit numbers on the timetables are the long distance trains that travel outside the Boston-Springfiled-NYC-Philly-DC-NewportNews area such as, the Crescent (NYC to New Orleans), Vermonter, Maple Leaf, Lake Shore, and the Florida / NC trains.Four digit trains preceded with an “X” are the Acela Express trains. They run Boston to DC. On a final note, I regularly ride Amtrak to NYC from Pennsylvania. One Sunday morning, I was on a three car Keystone service that required a motive power switch in Philly (Diesel to Electric). When the AEM7 hooked up, it broke, so they just added another AEM7 and deadheaded the broke one. This must of looked funny to the railfan, seeing two AEM7’s pulling three amfleets.

Cool, thanks for posting the linkThis picture was taken the day after the one I rode. The train in the picture appears to be heading south, my train was northbound. AEM7's seem to have electrical problems in the cold, especially with snow
