RE: 40 Ft Boxcars

I believe the last ones were used back in the seventies because they were just too small to be economical anymore

RE: 40 Ft Boxcars

I would tend to agree with bs rr co. As the 70's came to a close, the 40 footers were becoming increasingly rare in Class 1 usage. You could still find them in specialized service, but for the most part, the 50 footers were the new king.Andre MingVisit VSC's temporary web page at: http://www.vscalecreations.comVisit VSC's Forum at: http://www.3DTrains.com40 Ft Boxcars – image 2

LAST EDITED ON Dec-11-04 AT 01:29 PM (EST)

Canadian Pacific still had some 40ft boxcars in grain service right up till March of 2000. They were used on light rail prarie branchlines where normal grain hoppers were too heavy. These branchlines were abandoned that year and the cars were withdrawn from revenue service. CP also used a large fleet of 40ft boxcars on the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway right up to the mid 90s when most of the cutomers that used them stopped using rail service.

Back in 2001, I saw a 40' boxcar lettered for CSX on train Q401, it was heavily rusted, and was on 70-ton roller bearing trucks.I have a freind who told me he saw back in the 90s a Western Maryland 40' boxcar, this car of course long since gone.-Jeffrey

I think those 40' high cubes are still somewhat common, I see them around Chicago quite often. They look too short to be 50 footers.

RE: 40 Ft Boxcars

As with most things railroading, there are exceptions to generalizations. Around here, aside from the rare MOW car, 40' boxcars are long gone from the Class 1 rails, and, isolated special service requirements aside, I suspect that is the case nationwide. However, back to the original question: "Do railroads still use 40' boxcars."Yes, you can find isolated cases (MOW, etc). No, they do not still use them in widespread general service.Of course, this is easy enough to determine: Simply get next to a Class 1 and watch the next manifest through. Count the number of 40' boxcars. Andre MingVisit VSC's temporary web page at: http://www.vscalecreations.comVisit VSC's Forum at: http://www.3DTrains.com40 Ft Boxcars – image 8

Andre
Actually even in MOW service the 40' box has become a rare bird it seems that with the shift towards more intermodal that older 50'(and in some cases 60')have become surplus.
Prior to borging the C&NW had pretty much replaced all it's MOW 40' boxes with gray and red painted 50' boxes(became one of the few times you could find a CGW DF plug door still in original paint was on a local MOW project)Gary S

Gary:Ah, the Borg. Speaking of the Borg... last year some time, the UP was doing some track work and had a work train spotted at Vian, OK. Therein I saw a former Katy 40' in MOW service. Was in the old red "Deramus" scheme with the small, ornate "Shield" emblem. Got a so-so pic of it (poor light), was hoping to use it for a skin.Bill Cline said:"Mine does! <g>"I hear'ya! I really like the 40' era. Got an upcoming project that will be heavily populated with 40' boxcars.

I saw a news posting from one or two years back of one of the Mexican RR's purchasing new 40's for bagged cement service.Matt40 Ft Boxcars – image 10
