RE: NEC Electrifaction

It doesn't anymore. Formerly, it extended to Potomac Yard in Alexandria, VA, but for freight service only. Conrail discontinued electic power on freight service, and not long after that, Potomac yard disappeared when it was phased out by CSX. That's the short version of the long story... -Phil

RE: NEC Electrifaction

Does that mean that Regional and Metroliner services to Richmond, VA etc. have to undergo an engine change at Union Station?

The regional and metroliner deadedn at Union Station. Those trains only run between Boston and Washington. South of DC, you have other schedules trains, some of which originate north of DC, but use a diesel P42 engine, such as the one shown here at the Bowie maryland MARC station on the NEC, just north of Washington. I attempted to make a timetable for the NEC, but found it was much easier just to go to Amtrak's website.Chris Bogley

RE: NEC Electrifaction

All power is changed at philly or Washington Union station because the wires end just south of Washingtion. After one of the two stations a P42 will pick up. AEM7AC 920

That's a brilliant idea! Cable reel highspeed passenger service! Like underground mining only on the surface over a much longer distance. Woot! DOn't let the cord trip you while walkin' across the tracks now. I can just see the signs, Danger, high voltage reeled cable, watch your step.

RE: NEC Electrifaction

All Amtrak trains traveling south of Washington change engines in Washington, with the possible exception of one Florida train that may still change engines at Philadelphia. You will see half an hour or so scheduled in Washington for these trains to accommodate the engine change. When the Atlantic City Express still ran, the Richmond-Atlantic City trains provided the fastest schedule between Virginia and points north to Philadelphia, because they didn't change engines, but ran with diesel power all the way to Atlantic City. An F40's top speed is less than an AEM7's but the much shorter dwell time in Washington more than compensated.

RE: NEC Electrifaction

If your talking about the one next to the P42 it's the MARC HHP-8 and there was a repaint a while ago in the file library, do a search for Marc or HHP-8AEM7AC 920
