A point that needs to be emphasized is that the presence of cameras - private and official - is a DETERRENT to potential terrorists. The policy is not only wrong, not only ineffective, but also counterproductive.Ron http://www.railwaystation.com
It's not much but better than nothing... here is the small mail I sent in to them This has got to be one of the most useless ideas I have ever heard of. I understand how bad ideas like this come into play. With the paranoia that terrorism instills in people in today’s age to just make them want to throw all the freedoms they have away for the illusion of a "Safe place to live." It's an unfortunate fact of life that some people want to hurt other people but telling someone they cannot take a picture of something will accomplish nothing other than taking another liberty away from law abiding people. Any rule as such would be a feeble attempt at best. You could not possibly enforce a rule like this to anyone off of MTA property. Meaning that any attempt to enforce on a person taking a photograph of MTA property while not ON MTA property would be violating a persons civil rights. Just as I cannot prevent anyone from standing in the street, sitting in an airplane, flying overhead on a glider, balloon, or even sitting in a tree in the neighbors yard from taking a picture of my house. Although I'd admit it would be difficult to take pictures of sub-terrain portions of MTA property from some of these viewpoints that is not the point. The point is It's impossible to prevent this (unenforceable). That being said pictures or video of parts of the MTA system would still be easily attainable to anyone with half of an imagination. And if any person intending to do harm can stand off of MTA property and still get enough information to hurt someone, then you have accomplished nothing. I realize that what is in view when ON MTA property may be different than the view OFF of MTA property, but this difference is moot. If someone intended to do harm they would just move the location of their attack. My point is... someone intending to do harm that is dedicated to their cause is not going to care what you do to try to make things difficult for them, they will still try to hurt people. So now a photography ban makes things even worse. Why? Because now when something does happen and people are hurt or killed you have thousands of people who just might have been capable of taking a video/picture of someone/something suspicious in the same timeframe of this attack which could prove helpful in finding what happened or the persons responsible… oops… nope, I forgot photographs are not allowed because someone "Might" do something bad with it. You want to make the MTA a safer place... Encourage people to take tons of pictures... Bring your camera... People generally act much different when they know they may be on camera or are being watched.Railfan, amateur photographer, CCTV Security System InstallerNick
Wasn't this issue resolved some months ago?"The F59PHI and Genesis are the lamest excuses for locomotives Amtrak has ever operated - accept it and move on. Resolved...not reallyThey tried in May but heavy public pressure forced them to table it. Now what has happened is that they are trying again this time during the holiday season when most people will be "distracted" by the holidays. Not so fast, a number of media sources as well as NYCSUBWAY.org have brought this to light.
