Hey all-I have heard from several sources on Dec 18 of this year, trains will be mandated to honk at every crossing all the time. Was wondering if any of you railroad employees know if this will really happen or will it be pushed back? Ice also heard towns will get a two year period to upgade crossings where the ban can still be in effect? Any information about this is much appreciated.Kevin V. -President/CEO of Illinois Northern Ry Inc, subsidiary of The Midwest Regional Railways Corp.Illinois Railway Museum Conductor Trainee
Ohio Southern is on the way...coming when I get sick of the IN!
I didnt see the answer to a question I have on there- what dictates a quiet zone? What is required for it? The BNSF and UP lines out of chicago near me are currently quiet zones...will they be turned into horn fests? I sure hope so!Thanks!Kevin V. -President/CEO of Illinois Northern Ry Inc, subsidiary of The Midwest Regional Railways Corp.Illinois Railway Museum Conductor Trainee

I believe in Canada, that the municipality would hear complaints from residents, a study will be put in place, and, the municipality, after taking into account tresspass activity, safety, proximity to schools etc...would approach the railroad.

From what I've come to understand, in order for a quiet zone to be in effect, a four quadrant crossing gate system will have to be installed at each grade crossing in that zone. If the municipalities that currently have whistle bans in effect don't come up with the money and don't have this type of gate system installed by April 1, then the law will require trains to sound their horns at these crossings regardless of local regulations. The municipalities have the responsibility to have the gates installed at their own expense, and then the railroads have the responsibility to maintain them, either by their own signal departments, or by private contractors.
It's not only four quadrant gates, there must also be divider down the middle of the road. From what I hear, if there are only two gates and no divider, each crossing will cost close to one million dollars a piece.
I know that they have some debates about horns in residendental areas Flordia did a study on this topic , They made the train's sound there horns less at crossing and the number of accidents increased very bad . So it will be nice to have more saftey and you might want to check Operation Life Saver you might find the answer your looking for there.
