http://www.trains.com/Content/Dynamic/Articles/000/000/005/582jjuun.aspHopefully these new guys (if they do buy it, its all still up in the air) will bring more quality to EMD and won't "neglect" it like GM does.

I agree that GE is the industry leader right now and if the SD70ACe doesn't take off for EMD the future doesn't look good. I hope that EMD stays aflot. The industries always go down hill when there is no compentition. Lets all hope for the best on this one EMD repportively on the verge of being sold – image 7

RE: EMD repportively on the verge of being sold

GE has more competition than just EMD. There are smaller companies such as Motive Power building and rebuilding locos. I'm sure the railroads would rather save a few bucks keeping there older power running instead of paying the $1 million+ for new engines. Then there's the trend of leasing companies, which also rebuild, and are a little cheaper than railroad owned locomotives.Besides, it's sad to say, but those trusty SD40's won't last forever. When it's time to replace them (thousands?) all builders will be busy, one company alone doesn't have enough capacity to replace them all. That's one reason why GE is at the top today- When western coal was developing and the railroads needed more power. EMD was all booked up so the railroads were forced to go to GE.So basically I don't think the end is near for EMD.C h r i sEMD repportively on the verge of being sold – image 8

Please, don't make me laugh...You really think that MPI will be able to compete with GE (or even EMD, for that matter) on the mainline freight loco market? They tried it once and had to bow out, what makes you think that won't happen again? MPI has neither the backing, nor the technology (in the form of a plausible prime mover),nor the sales force to make it happen. For all you EMD bashers out there, you better hope that EMD doesn't go under. Then, GE will have no reason to progress with technology, or even keep prices competitive. It's called MONOPOLY.Although I will admit that eventually someone will think that they can build a better mousetrap, as it were, and make things somewhat interesting, for a while at least.Anyways, I can't help but doubt that EMD will be sold...Trains is hardly the most accuate news source for the railroading world. Actually, they're more akin the National Enquirer if you ask me...DanEveryone is entitled to their opinion no matter how wrong it is.

RE: EMD repportively on the verge of being sold

I didn't mean that MPI could really compete with EMD and GE because they are so far from having the innovation being pushed around these days... but they can keep the older engines running which means less for the big builders. However, I do think that the smaller companies have a little more potential off in the future, even though the industry is already well established with GE and EMD and no other company will be able to take their place.I also don't think it's unreasonable for EMD to lead GE once more. It would be a shame for EMD to go out of business, probably really hurt the whole railroad industry in this country.C h r i sEMD repportively on the verge of being sold – image 10

A loco can only be rebuilt so many times before you're just throwing good money after bad. While there may be still a marketplace for rebuilt locos, I can't help but think that the market for rebuilt SD40's, for example, is nearing saturation.>I also don't think it's unreasonable for EMD to lead GE once

RE: EMD repportively on the verge of being sold

That link tells the real story.GM is in trouble. They are selling their side business so they can focus on the main one. That would be selling cars, not locomotives.

Modeling CSX, Metro North(ex CR, PC, NYC) Hudson Line, West Albany to New York Penn Station, 150 miles.
Mainline 100% complete.

>That would be selling cars, not locomotives. And imo, their auto line isn't exactly doing that well either. I think they are third in US manufacturers behind Dodge and Ford (did I just say Ford was better than Chevy )

The problem would be solved if fuel-effecient (and quiet) SD40-2's replaced GE's. Maybe that's just my EMD-biased opinion.

I can definitely see EMD being sold. While UP's buying about 100 SD70ACe's to add to CSX's 20 Aces, BNSF is ordering 380 GEVO's and UP's ordering 200-300 GEVO's too. Of course, the always cheap Norfolk Southern has ordered 65 more of the ubiquitos Crapfish, this shows that NS isn't ready to get into the Tier II thing yet. NS C40-9W 9978 will probably be the last Dash series locomotive, and, depending on the way you look at it, the last 3rd generation GE.
