I'd like to switch my operating system (current Windows XP Pro)to my older OS which is Windows ME. I found that with Win ME my computer ran faster, the same goes for MSTS.
I have the Windows XP CD-ROM and 6 floppy boot disks, and I also have my Windows ME re-installation CD-ROM along with the Reasource CD that came default with my whole computer. I have tried myself, but my attempts had failed, so if there is anyone who would be as so kind to give some advice it would be greatly appreciated.Thank You {ANTESTOR} Kamil
You can't go back from XP to ME unless you re-format your hard drive and then clean install ME.The best way is to use FDISK to destroy the current partition. Then run "fdisk /mbr" to clean any boot viruses. Then use your ME re-installation CD and load ME back on the now blank hard drive.FDISK can be found on any Win98 setup disk. It is also very easy to make a setup or boot disk. I keep an old computer running Win98SE in order to play some old games and to make these very useful setup/boot disks. PartitionMagic can also be used to delete the old XP FAT32 or XP NTFS partition. However, you will need to backup any info because you will lose anything on your hard drive when you do this re-installation.This should work fine.Tim
God,I cant imagine anyone actually going back to ME. That operating system was so Ram hungry I never had enough resources left to do anything else when I was running it but good luck.

eek...Windows ME?? I tried it once, and I personally found it to be the worst opertating system I'd ever seen. It was very unstable and I got frequent hang-ups and program crashes. Everyone else I've talked to had similar problems and in general most people agreed it's a very buggy OS and not reliable. If you're going to re-install an earlier Windows OS, I'd recommend just going back to Windows 98SE or Windows 2000. Win2000 is a lot like 98, but it's supposed to be more reliable. The computers I used at school have it, and I liked it. I don't like Windows XP much either, actually. Everyone seems to have jumped on the wagon with it, but personally, to me it seems like it makes way too many assumptions and has too many automatic features. It seems too like files get buried and it's a little more complicated to just browse through them manually like you can with Windows 98.These are just my own opinions. If you were comfortable with Windows ME, then that's your choice of course. And if that's the only other Windows you have besides the XP, then you don't have much other choice. Windows is really just too freaking expensive to buy another version of it if you don't need to. I would definitely agree with what the other person said though...format your hard drive and do a clean install. If any files are left over from a previous OS, it can cause problems. I have Windows 98 SE on this computer, but somehow over the years and the number of times I've had to borrow the installation disk from friends (and...err copies of it) I think I've ended up with both Windows 98 and Second Edition files on here, and that might explain the blue screens I often get when I try to shut down. I hate .DLL files. Hey, that would be an idea for a new OS that I would try out! Someone please make a Windows-type OS that does NOT use ANY .DLL's!Chris T.
>If you're going to re-install an earlier >Windows OS, I'd recommend just going back to Windows 98SE or >Windows 2000. Win2000 is a lot like 98, but it's supposed >to be more reliable. For the record let me help you clear up some of that mis-information you stated.Windows 2000 is nothing like Windows 98, as OS's they are completely different in every way possible. There simply is no comparison possible between those two, Windows 2000 is a completely different animal in the best way.Windows ME is very similar to Windows 98, just not nearly as reliable. Windows ME is considered the buggiest OS that Microsoft ever released.Windows XP is based on Windows 2000, those two are very similar. If you don't like Windows XP it's doubtful you'll like Windows 2000. Windows XP is much more game and media friendly than Windows 2000, which is why consumers like it. Both are rock solid and very reliable.
