I was driving around looking for one of my friends here in McGregor at about 7:15pm when the SB Texas Eagle pulled in late. Nothing unusual... except for the locomotive up front. It started to pull out for the station and I decided to catch it. I didn't realize just how fast those could accelerate a train (1 baggage, 7 superliners)! I got behind while driving through town and it took me 6 miles to catch it right outside of Moody. I topped out at about 100 mph in my sisters Alero (My trucks getting a door handle fixed). I drove alongside for about 1/2 of a mile and found out what that unusual paint scheme was. It was either a P40 or P42 painted white with a 2005 Ford F150 strecthed out on the side. Anyone in San Antonio area might want to be on the lookout and have a camera ready. Really a rare treat!

Yes Amtrak is now starting an advertising program like VIA, big vinyl posters on the sides of the locomotives. The first one is apparently a pickup truck.C h r i sInteresting Amtrak Sighting – image 1

RE: Interesting Amtrak Sighting

It's a Toyota TUNDRA, not Tacoma. I'm surprised ya'll haven't heard about this yet. I've seen 84 and 115, the two Tundra units. They were both on the SW Chief coming from LA to Chicago so they could be put on the Texas Eagle and some other train.Joe LeMay

Ack, you're right Joe, my apologies.Dave, you wouldn't be saying that if you've ever driven one...more torque than just about anything else in its class...and a transmission that won't fall off at 100K miles DanEveryone is entitled to their opinion no matter how wrong it is.

Dan, you crack me up. Yeah I've driven one before. And Yes I have also driven my Dad's Ram 2500 with the 347 Hemi, even though I am only 15. From the Dodge company site, the 5.7 liter 347 Hemi has 345 horses and 375 ft/lbs of torque. From the Toyota site, the biggest engine they make, the 4.7 liter (donno the ci) has 282 horses and 325 ft/lbs of torque.Nuff said there. As for the tranny falling off, That made me laugh because the Toyota's arn't exactly the most rugged trucks themselves.Oh yea, and the benifet for Toy-box-ota, its got better gas milage.

I don't know what you guys get down there, but Toyota's got a 5.something V8 available up here....the numbers are comparible to the Hemi's.But the V6's...well, is there a Hemi V6? My friend seemed to think that there was, but it wasn't as powerful as the Toyota V6.Not rugged? My friend rolled the demo truck that he was lent by the company (he works for Toyota Marketing), and after righting it, turned the key and drove off like it was nothing. That's pretty decent in my books.Meh, whatever....to each his own. Back to your regularly scheduled rail-based discussions.DanEveryone is entitled to their opinion no matter how wrong it is.

Dan, You must thinking of the Nissan Titan. 5.6 liter. I looked this one up online too, and it still only has 305 horses and 370 ft/lbs of torque.Geeze I didn't think it was that close. But still, the hemi's got it beat on horsepower.Nope no V6 Hemi, er atleast I've never heard of one, and if there was it would definatly be as powerful as a Toyota V6. Chrysler Corp. made a 426 Hemi (the old and better one) and the new one which is a 347.OK, Now back to rail based discussion

I would say that,I've driven them all,it's my business to know the competition. The trannies in the older Dodges were crap.Which is good for a parts guy.The new 45RFE is a superior transmission, not good for a parts guy.Now Toyota has always built good trucks with solid powertrains, they just rot away after a few years.Like it or not folks, the new Ram is the best truck on the market.

The only problem I see now with the MOPAR Hemi,is that the bottom end isn't suited yet for serious forced induction. My buddies 2001 Z28 dynoed at 577 hp and 508 ft-lbs recently on a stock bottom end and its reliable power. But the 5.7 has just been released as a crate motor by MOPAR set up for carbs or MPI.Hopefully they will be offering a heavier duty forged crank and rods and etc. for that bad boy.And we should see the 6.1L Hemi soon with over 400 ponies.

Unless things got shuffled around, 115 is on the Texas Eagle and should likely be into Chicago on Friday the 26th.

Can you say "That thing gotta Hemi?" LOL
I hate it when American comanies sell out to the Japaneese. Why would Amtrak do that?

Clever marketing idea and a good way for Amcrack to bring in some extra cash. Busses in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada have had that kind of advertising on their sides for ten years now.Cheers,

RE: Interesting Amtrak Sighting

There's a new program happening around here where local police agencies are able to purchase a new fully equipped cruiser for about $1000. The catch is that the cruiser, in addition to their standard police insignia and markings, will have advertising placards on the rear fenders and trunks for local or national sponsors. The first time I see one with Krispie Kreme plastered all over it I hope laughing out loud isn't a ticketable offense.

Yup, she was on the NB Eagle yesterday...I'd forgotten about it and lucked into seeing it as it came through Jefferson last night. Kind of interesting.*Edit* Oh yeah, and as an owner of the Hemi Ram, I'm sure my bias is known. However, it's awfully tempting to trade it in for the SRT-10 Viper-powered Ram. We've only got two SRT-10's on the floor, one black and the other silver. We've also got a few Rumble-Bee's.All in NYSW colors. Two 4x4's that are yellow with a black stripe and one 4x2 that's black with a yellow stripe. The 2 wheel drive version hauls a$$.
