You think that seems im the President and Founder of GVRS, and also route builder, that I should know what the Yard Limit Rule is. Well i dont. sad to say. I have noticed The Sign is placed one mile or more from the Yard or Interchange. But what are they for? whats the "Yard Limit" Mean, and why is it a rule? Do you have to reduce speed to 10-20MPH? Just wondering.
"Rule 93: Within yard limits the main track may be used, clearing first class trains as prescribed by the rules. Protection against second and thrid class trains and extra trains is not required. Second and third class trains and extra trains must move within yard limits prepared to stop short of train, engine or cars unless main track is seen or known to be clear."You're welcome. Yard limits only apply on the main track with the limits defined by the yard limit signs. It allows a train or engine to use the main track without clearance authority.Trains and engines are required to operate at reduced speed, a speed that will permit stopping within one-half the range of vision of equipment. In Canada yard limits do not apply in CTC.AndrewBC Rail Squamish Subdivision for MSTS
In the USIn addition to the authority discussed aboveAll movements entering or moving within yard limits must be made at "restricted speed" (able to stop within half the range of distance short of engine, switch, men or equipment, etc. not exceeding 20mph) unless operating under a block system more favorable than approach. In CTC territory (within yard limits) A control operator (dispatcher, yardmaster) must authorize any movement on the main track. You are moving slowly through the yard to make sure you can stop if something gets in front of you. Trainmasters like to test crews on this rule. They will pop out in front of you giving a stop sign. You have to stop before you get to them. They also will put a banner up that you have to stop short of. If there is CTC in the yard, you can move faster than restricted speed if you get a signal better than yellow. Also, a yardmaster generally tells you what track to accupy within CTC in the yard.
