RE: Help with Building New route & Subway

I don't want to discourage you, but 'tis no simple task to build a route. You may be much more accomplished at all this stuff than most of us are, but a decent route will probably take you at least 6 months to build.OK. First go to the Route Design Forum and read through the anchored post for first-time route builders. That's about as good as I can do for "a link." There are about a million questions that you'll have as you get into the process, and the Route Design Forum is the place to ask them. Nearly everyone you ask (at least those who have built routes) will recommend that you get Michael Vone's book on route building - Google Michael Vone and MSTS route building. You'll probably want to get some software to help with laying out the route. I'm not sure what's available for Canada, especially for underground lines, but you'll need to get something with a map of the route, and then something that lets you plot route markers. There are a couple of programs in the Train-Sim File Library that work well. Do a search in the Route Design forum on "markers" and see what you can find - I use USAPhotoMaps, but I don't know if that'll work for Canada (depends on whether the topo maps at Terraserver extend that far north). DEMEX (digital-rails.com) is another good program used for creating the terrain. If you're all underground, that may not be a big deal, but if you pop out to the surface, then you'll want to create the terrain. There are DEMs (Digital Elevation Models) available now for Canada. Again, see the Route Design Forum for the anchored post on Canadian DEMs.If you want to build the rolling stock and custom structures, you'll need something like Gmax for the 3D model creation. It's free, but takes some learning (OK, a lot of learning) to make it work. You'll also need a graphics program. MS Paint will work, but you'll probably want to get something a bit more advanced like Paint Shop Pro. For tips on these programs, you can search through the Locomotive Design Forum. As you might be able to tell from these suggestions, there is a lot of work involved, but if you really want to make it happen, you can.Good luck!Andy
