Okay I work as a pipefitter, this week I am working at a corn processing plant here in eastern Iowa, now they get alot of grain and tank cars in by rail, I was looking around today while we were waiting for an hot work permit. From up where we were working I could see the grain unloading shed. I was watching them unload the car and pretty soon a John Deere 644J endloader comes thur the shed on the other line, backs up to the car and pushes it out. then it comes back back thur turns around and what to my eyes see, it has a coupler on the backend of the endloader. It then backs up to the next car and pulls it into the shed to unload.I wish I could take pictures of the plant but their rule forbid it.I have never saw a endloader used to shuttle cars around like that before, and it moved them at a pretty good clip and stops quickly to.Tohught I would share this

no this was up in Cedar Rapids Iowa, at a Cargill plant. I thought it was cool I just never seen that done before, today they were moving 6 loaded grain cars at a time.Sounds like its prety common though.
Common practice for the grain elevators in this area if they don't have a Mule (small switch engine) to shuttle grain cars. I have seen them use a 4wd farm tractor for the same purpose.Such shuttle work is done on their own private spurs.SRV Ron
Many Railroads have front end loaders they use for that purpose. I've even seen a CSX Boom truck pull a work train from Lansing to Detroit.Mike 36.0 outhttp://hometown.aol.com/chucktab/a1.html
Quite a while ago, about ten years ago, I took a trip on the #5 Amtrak train. As the train passed through a desert-like area (I think, don't quite remember where), I noticed many freight cars, mostly tankers and boxcars, and some old Amtrak Heritage equipment next to the main line. Some of the cars didn't even appear to be on tracks, just sitting on the ground. There were also a few large truck cranes with hydraulic railroad wheels and couplers at each end. I don't know what was going on there, a derailment maybe or some type of storage area?I also saw some other interesting things. In a mountainous area I saw what looked like an old wooden railroad tressle attached to the side of a cliff.C h r i s
