RE: What a poor thing!

It only needs a new paint job, new horn, new numberboards, new trucks, new fuel tanks, new exaust, new engine, and It'll be ready to roll. Which will never happen...

RE: What a poor thing!

Heh, I've taken photos of that thing in Schelville, California (which gets A LOT of fog, btw.) It is sitting on the interchange between the Southern Pacific and the North Western Pacific. Both lines are now out of service because the FRA shut down the NWP. To the right of the picture, there is a old depot, the local 2 lane highway, and across the highway are 3 more SD9E's and a Bessemer F unit. In fact one of the SD9E's is a former SP passenger SD9 that is currently rusting away... If the 3rd SP pack from Danny Beck gets released, the sideframe textures will be from that unit.

RE: What a poor thing!

Awful. I like SD7/9s that is too bad. What will be done with these engines, and why did the FRA shut down the railroad?C h r i sWhat a poor thing! – image 3

She don't appear to be so bad off, especially if she's got all her components intact. From the picture, I can't really tell that she's missing anything inside. And while she needs all her paint stripped and redone, that actually is not such an overwhelming project. In fact, you could actually get her running if shes in one piece and you clean out the lines and injectors. At my museum, we work out doors, with simple tools, and we seem to be able to pull off a miracle or two in repairing and restoring equipment. Actually, if you really want to do something very special, and very enjoyable, go rally support for these locomotives. Go through the forums and find railfans around your area, and get them excited about it. Even if you don't wont to take on such a project, you can talk to a local museum, one who might benifit from these locomotives. Even if all you do is show intrerest and support, that really helps museums acomplish projects. If enough peaple supported the action, they can overcome any legal, financial, and technical issues that oppose you. even if you don't do alot, you accomplish a great deal when you support a museum! So go out, and help those who preserve history for all to enjoy! Here's my old girl, a BLW DRS 6-6-1500, who I work on every saturday.

RE: What a poor thing!

At the Illinois Railway Museum we have SP SD7 #1518. Its frame sags too. They were built that way. A bunch came off the assembly line like that before EMD realized they had to arch the frame up because when they welded onto it and stuff the frame sagged down. Once they arched them up, they came out straight, or "right".
Paint is a simple simple project. Its internally that determines whether an engine is crap or not. Our 1518 was stored for a number of years and because it was stored well, required little work to get her running again. Now she sees service several times a year.
Best part is, were gonna put the mars lights back on it! Kevin V.

I think I've seen that loco in Beaverton, OR. It didn't have all that grafitti on it but it looked like it had been through a fire.Cal Rasmussen

I actually had a SD9 in a train the other day. It was still in service and ran just like new. It offered a great ride and a tall toilet http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=85456
It still has its original control stand. SD9's are the best switch engines ever made.

RE: What a poor thing!

Hey, if they don't want it, I'll take it!! Ummm....where I would put it, I don't have any idea.I remember I saw this railroad surplus website where they were selling everything, even old locomotives and cars. They had a locomotive from the 1940s...it ran, but they said one traction motor was inoperative. I think they were selling the locomotive for about $5,000! If only...put it on the front yard, it would be worth it just to see the look on the neighbors' faces! Chris T.

RE: What a poor thing!

How far are you away from San Diego. I am a member of the Pacific Southwest Railroad Museum (www.psrm.org) and if we could find out who owns them..... We operate a railroad out in the desert and are always looking for new "toys" and projects.
