Feb-08-02, 11:59 PM (EST) "FIVE MEN PERISH IN A COAL TRAIN" This is a clip from a newspaper in my area, just thought I'd like to show itFive men perish in coal trainBodies found by plant workerAINSLEE S. WITTIGArizona Range NewsFive bodies were discovered in a railroad coal car at Apache Generating Station in Cochise last Wednesday, officials said. The dead men, three of whom were identified as Mexican nationals from Chihuahua, were discovered by a Sierra Southwest employee working for Arizona Electric Power Cooperative at 2:15 a.m., Jan. 30, as the coal car was unloaded at the generating station, said Steff Koeneman, spokeswoman for Sierra Southwest.A hundred AEPCO rail cars had picked up 100 tons each of coal at the Lee Ranch Mine near Gallup, N.M. All five Hispanic males had been unloaded onto a conveyor belt with the coal. At that time, the employee "saw something white in the midst of the cargo" and immediately stopped the unloaded process, said Carol Capas, spokeswoman for Cochise County Sheriff's Department. "Often people are sighted sitting in the coal cars as they come into the station, but no observation was made of these people." she said."They must have been under the coal at that time. Stowaways have burrowed under the coal for warmth." She also said the coal funnels down when it is unloaded."We don't know when they boarded the car and we don't know when they died," Koeneman said. "We're waiting for the autopsy results."Mexican Consul Miguel Escobar Valdez, who is based in Douglas, said family members identified the men Feb. 1, as Gerardo Ruben Jimenez Martinez, 29; Gerardo Ramon Jimenez Martinez, 27; Carmelo Monarrez Ramirez, 38; Rafael Alberto Palma-Salas, 36; and Wenceslao Torres-Torres, 48, all of Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua. Koeneman said an employee in a tower checks the cars by sight with lights as the train approaches the generating station, located off Highway 191 near Cochise. If people are observed in the cars, they are escorted to the office, given food or water or other attention if necessary and sent to the appropriate authorities. Koeneman said this method of observing the cars has worked, and nothing like this has happened before.Koeneman said counseling assistance through a company program is available for all empoyees

Feb-09-02, 10:06 AM (EST) 1. "RE: FIVE MEN PERISH IN A COAL TRAIN" Damn I thought with NAFTA and Dubya's friendship and cooperation with Pres. Fox that we were finally turning the corner on helping them establishing a livable economy and those poor bastards weren't having to do this anymore in near the numbers they were... As the grand child of immigrants who came over in "steerage" I have nothing but sympathy for these guys' families.... I think the proper phrase is Vaya usted a Dios (go with God)... (Much more elegant than R.I.P.)------Chuck Schneider---------
