Just noticed that Jasc has released Paint Shop Pro Ver 9. Does anybody have enough experience with it yet to make any comments or recommendations? My main concern is how it handles transparent surfaces, I still remember the problems with Ver 8 when it came out. Thanks, Bill

RE: Paint Shop Pro 9

Bill,I have been using PSP9 for about a month and had PSP6,7, and 8 before this latest. I haven't really messed very much with the transparency mask thingy. However, I have not heard any complaints in the PSP forum at http://forums.jasc.com/ . I don't know what the problem you had with PSP8 was, but I would suggest you go to the forum, join (free) and ask your questions. The group there is very generous with all issues.Lastly, I presume you know you can download the full version 9 of PSP which is good for 60 days use and practice with it. Thus far, I am very satisfied.Bill Cline

RE: Paint Shop Pro 9

Just got my hard copy upgrade from JASC. Will let you know in a few days when I can test out the alpha on the tga textures.V8 was updated but still didn't fix the tga problem, (although a texture created in V8, loaded and saved back using V7 would work properly.)SRV Ron

RE: Paint Shop Pro 9

Just installed PSP9 and set it up to my preference settings. Created an alpha channel mask for a test texture and saved it as a tga file. (must be uncompressed.)Created a box with the test texture and set to transnorm. The object loaded normally into the RE with the alpha cutout working properly. Therefore, the PSP8 bug for TGA alpha files appears to have been fixed.SRV Ron

RE: Paint Shop Pro 9

Ron - You had better luck then me. I downloaded Ver 9 for evaluation, made a test image with an Alpha, but couldn't get it to display properly in TGATool 2. Made another in Ver 7, using the same methods and it displayed OK. Performed both of the above twice with same results both times. Didn't try putting it in RE.I made the Alpha using the Magic Wand tool, instead of making a mask, but don't think that should make a difference.Noticed that Ver 9 has several interface features from Ver 8 that I like, so would sure like to use it if I can get the Alpha to work.Keep us posted on how you like Ver 9.Bill

RE: Paint Shop Pro 9

Magic wand tool works just fine for making the alpha. (You may need to Invert Selection to get it correct.) When saving, the black area is the transparant cutout in MSTS.When saving the TGA file, turn compression off. As only one alpha channel is saved in TGA, if you make changes, you have to manually enter the original name for the alpha in order to replace it. PSP will alert you for the ok to do so. Otherwise, it just keeps the original one for the TGA file.SRV Ron
