Feb-06-02, 08:32 PM (EST) "Could a Petition save AMTRAK?" Yeah , Yeah Amtrak is not the Southern Railway, Santa Fe Railroad, or the other classics but its the only major Passenger railroad we have. If we create an online petition and send it to The senators and congressman could it help? Need the info you guys. Whats you opinion?

Feb-07-02, 02:09 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Could a Petition save AMTRAK?" I don't know at this point.... sounds more like lots and lots of $$$ is the only hope. But then again, every little bit of support helps. There is a web site devoted to saving Amtrak. It has news articles and various bits of information about the current situation as well as some official addresses to write to to show support.http://www.saveamtrak.org Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-07-02, 02:36 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Could a Petition save AMTRAK?" Sure, writing always helps. When Amtrak threatened to shut down 7 trains, including "mine", the Texas Eagle, I wrote letters to everyone. President, congress, Amtrak, etc. As did MANY people on the Texas Eagle route. And ya know what? The train survived. It was the only one of those 7 that did. And because of mail and express it became one of Amtrak's top performing long distance trains. Soooo...I'm writing again. It DOES help that my senator heads up the Amtrak sub-committee, so maybe we'll see results.Blake Harris

Feb-07-02, 04:12 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Could a Petition save AMTRAK?" We MUST save Amtrak!!!!! We need to do whatever it takes to make sure that those of us that use Amtrak alot are heard. You would think that after Sept. 11, the government would see the importance of the rail system in the country and want to expand it instead of get rid of it. When all of the planes were grounded, where did people turn? The TRAINS!!! Those who still don't feel comfortable flying, what form of transportation are they taking? The TRAINS!!! I understand that the government puts a lot of money into the airlines and they want to protect their investment but they completely fund Amtrak, you would think that they would want to look at the trains as a priority.
If everyone could write to their own representatives and also the Sec. of Transportation, it may help. At least we would be heard.
I know that I'm preaching to the choir though so I'll get off of my soapbox. ####### Railqueen######## Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Good Morning! I was very serious when I suggested that we write the Sec. of Defense and not being flip. Our President continues to use the word WAR, even though Congress has yet to officially declare it as such, then the government should seriously protect our Nations ability to move military personnel via rail. As the new Defense Dept. spending bill winds it way thru Congress we should urge our elected officials to protect this vital transportation WEAPON! Railroads are part of our Homeland Security and should be treated as such!

Feb-08-02, 08:25 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Could a Petition save AMTRAK?" Jeffrey,
YES, ridership did increase for a short time in the North East Corridor and then fell back to its normal ridership counts. I suppose it was like flying our National Flag. Everybody had to fly Old Glory and as time passed the need seemed to diminish and now you can count the number of flags flying on one hand. Sometimes it seems that we have short memories and/or can not be bothered! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-08-02, 01:30 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Could a Petition save AMTRAK?" I'm sure a petition or a lot of letters will end up being just a petition and a lot of letters. What Amtrak needs is money. So, let's have every railfan in the country open up their checkbooks and start sending those checks in... $10,000, $15,000, $25,000 or (preferably) more. Whatever they can afford. Then be prepared to do the same thing next year. And then again the next. And so on... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
