As some of you will recall, I "signed off" last week, citing a boredom within MSTS. I did in fact delete my MSTS, and went back to playing SimCity 3000 Unlimited, my favorite game prior to MSTS. I got as far as a city with 250,000 and thats when the earthquake occured casueing my power plants to meltdown.....um, well, anyway, as some have noted, I really never left. Despite other sites, I still count on the folks here when it comes to helping me get around in my travels, like my upcoming trip down south. But a funny thing happened on Sunday. I couldn't sleep, and like many other times, for unknown reason, I had a idea. Most of my ideas, as well as solutions to problems with MSTS occur at night. The one major pitfall I had with the sim was I never had any luck with aliasing cabviews or sounds, despite reading topics and tutorials. So the idea was to do a fresh install, followed by Cascades, seeing how those are the cabview and sounds I prefer now. I would fool around with the default Dash 9. It was a case of "What makes this engine work?". I simply looked at the .sms files and how the MLT SP SD 70 was set up, and did the same to the dash 9. Presto! Since then, I have figured out how to alias rolling stock to the MLT Cascades rolling stock, and put other horns into my other engines, mixing and matching as I please. Another reason was the demise of MLT. I just had to run Cascades again.Well I can see this has gotton to be a long winded post, and for that I am sorry. I have said the same thing to people when they announce thier departure, just as some did to me, and well, I'm back, even thought I never really left Chris Bogley

RE: As you may...or may not have noticed......

Chris,You, of all people, couldn't figure out how to alias cabviews and sounds? Just goes to show you about mental blocks. That was absolutely the first thing I learned to do in MSTS. But the idea of building a route or even reskinning a freight car still terrifies me.For years I couldn't understand calculus from square one. Then I read a book whose title and author I have forgotten (I still have it somewhere--but it was 35 years ago after all), and suddenly it all seemed very clear to me.Maybe I'm not being very lucid about this. But the problem wasn't with you. It was about the way the human mind works, or sometimes just hits a brick wall, until there's an "aha!" moment. At any rate, MSTS is still full of challenges and interest to me. And I'm sure you will keep finding more too. Don't say "sayonara forever" just because you lose interest for a while!Cheers,

Chris-Interesting. I'd bet there are a numbers of regulars here who'd like a boost with an issue or two but hesitate to ask for help. We had a former member who could be very caustic if he thought a query or response was too basic. When I joined this forum in July '02, I was a total ignoramus with respect to both computers and trains - disabling shortcomings, one would think. Thanks to MSTS, I've learned a lot about both. But I was lucky; I got lots of patient help from Ron Paludan, Jasper Burmester, Martin Wright, Rich Garber (from his tutorial on consist building, originally available in part on the Maple Leaf Tracks site), and many others. Plus, I did what you did - looked inside files to see how they were set up and tried out my own mods. But eventually I stayed away from the forums when I had issues - and in fact I replied to queries by email as well, since I was sick of "attitude". Maybe, thanks to your post, people will be willing to ask for help with issues they think nobody else is having.Paul-Being somewhat obsessive/compulsive, I couldn't stand that all the units in my power consists had the same road number - so I set out a year ago to learn enough skinning to do renumbering. Once again, I got lots of help - 'specially from Gary Horninger (Gary H2). But now I'm up to re-skinning boxcars with photos from the web using PhotoShop - and hugely proud of myself. Try this string: http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID3/23669.html - reskinning in terms even I could understand.Bud

Welcome back my friend. I quite appreciate your contributions to the commmunity. A lot of my ideas come while I am in bed. One of my favorite techniques for soving problems (MSTS and otherwise) is to ponder the issue while falling asleep. In the morning I usually have an answer. I may not LIKE the answer but I know what to do. Cheers,

It's like an addiction, isn't it?You try to quit, and you think you have it beat. But then on one sleepless night, the craving gets to you. You can almost hear your MSTS disks call "You know you want to run me... Can't you hear the sound of the horn? Toot! Toot!" Then, the urge overwhelms you - your resistance weakens, and finally you give in. And before you know it, there you are, wife calling in the background and you almost autonomously replying "Just one more station to go, dear. Just one more station to go......", never once turning your face from the screen. Bwahahaha! Welcome Back Chris!----------- BUZZ -----------As you may… or may not have noticed – image 5

I got into MSTS because of my RR connection but soon found that I was learning a lot of stuff about manipulating the software and hardware that was entirely new to me. It's gotten to the point where I spend more time doing that than actually playing MSTS but that's OK. So, anyone got a link to a tutorial or "how to" on aliasing? I specifically want to put some of the newer horn sounds into some of the nice new locomotives that folks have created but am sort of stumped. For that matter, aliasing in general causes me fits. Sometimes I can and sometimes I can't. Appreciate any suggestions. This is a great comunity of folks with such a wide variety of experience and expertise. The common denomonator that I have found is a wonderful willingness to help another enthusiast. I'm grateful.Regards, James

This thread is from early October, a time when I was getting burned out on MSTS untill I figured out how to alias files.Yes, I will be flying out on the 18th, and Curt and I will then be coming out early on the 19th and staying up in the area pretty much till the 24th. Looking forward to the trip.Chris Bogley

I tought myself how to alias horns, cabviews and other sounds by looking at how a sound or cabview I wanted ot alias got to be that way. For example, I wanted the rolling stock sounds from MLT's Cascades crossing, so I looking in those folders to see what it took for those files to have those sounds, and then I did the same for the files I wanted to alias those sounds to. There are plenty of topics abound about this subject though, but that is how I did it. More or less spent a weekend teaching myself, goofing around.Chris Bogley

RE: As you may...or may not have noticed......

As Chris says, the best way to learn about this is to open up some representatative .eng files and sound folders and poke around to see how they're made. If you have payware loco sets, you could look in them, since they almost always use aliased sounds, as do most repaints of the TA/Kuju SD40-2 and default Dash 9.Basically, to "alias" a loco's sounds means to change the two Sound lines (Eng.sms for external sounds and Cab.sms for internal) to point to another loco's sounds or to sounds in the Commmon Sounds folder. This is pretty straightforward. For instance, to alias a loco to the Kuju/TA sd40-2, you open the .eng file with Wordpad and edit the sound lines so they read like this:Sound ( "..\\..\\SD402\\SOUND\\sd402eng.sms" )
Sound ( "..\\..\\SD402\\SOUND\\sd402cab.sms" )However, your reference to "aliasing new horns" makes me believe you're talking about something else: adding a particular horn .wav file to an existing sounds folder. If I remember correctly, this simply involves backing up the sounds folder, deleting the old .wav and moving the new .wav to the folder, renaming it the same as the one you replaced. I suggest you go to the Sound forum and do a search, then post a query if you still need help.Bud
