Can the superb computer minds around here rewrite the Route Editor to work like Trainz Surveyor? I know nothing of programming, this may be the world's dumbest question. Addicted to both MSTS and Trainz. Thanks, Roger D.

RE: Rewrite the Route Editor?

Until Microsoft releases the source code, which is not going to happen, it is next to impossible for someone to attempt to fix the RE.For now, you will have to put up with the buggy RE until the new TMTS is ready to replace it. SRV Ron

It was built with Kuju's graphic engine and M$ won't pay Kuju enough money for it.
Thats why we don't have MSTS2.

Roger, as said above, it's not going to happen, so .. the best thing is to read everything you can about it, jump in with both feet and have a ball. It is actually very workable once you get the hang of it as long as you work slowly and deliberately, keeping backup after backup and doing things in the correct order.Can't speak for Trainz since I've not worked with it at all, but yes MSTS Editors are all on the buggy, extremely vindictive side, but it can be done and with a fair amount of enjoyment once you get into it. Maybe that comes from a masochist, but I've had my fair of 'fun' and 'trials' with the former getting the largest percentage of time.RobertR .. ADF-M&RM at http://www.adfrr.com

I recommend the purchase of something called "Guide to Route Building" It is a .pdf file that covers the Route Editor quite extensively and has been quite useful to me. I believe more information on this wonderful guide can be found in one of the anchored threads in the Route Editing forum. If you want more info, contact me by e-mail (trains at garycameron dot org).Cheers,Gary Cameron

Hi Roger:I heartily concur with Robert Reedy: If you observe the sequences, then RE can be quite stable. I'm asking it to do some pretty bizarre things, but it is doing it, and doing it admirably... but I am observing the sequence of events!The main thing to remember is:DO NOT PLACE TRACK OBJECTS* until ALL track and road work is TOTALLY FINISHED and will NO LONGER be edited.Among this you can add any static scenery you want.ONLY when ALL of your track and roads are complete and you're ready to start wrapping up the project should you place TRACK OBJECTS. * Track objects are such things as:* Mileposts
* Speed limits
* Signals
* Level crossings
* Car spawners
* HazardsDO NOT do a TDB/RDB rebuild AFTER TRACK OBJECTS ARE INSTALLED/LINKED!!!!!Follow the above and there is no reason why you would not be able to finish a route.

Except for the extreme difficulty of making a starter block of terrain.

RE: Rewrite the Route Editor?

And place the car spawners last of all ... they are the most unloved, bug ridden element of the whole route building process.Depending on where you're from and what territory you're modelling there are several excellent ancilliary tools to help ease some of the pain. To get good looking terrain without resorting to hand carving, if you have access to good quality DEM (digital terrain) then DEMEX will transfer this into the sim. For European routes or where you are building from maps, TS Tools is an excellent tool and can handle contour tracing (for "home-made" DEM) and marker management plus much more.Most of us who have worked in the RE have vowed at one point or another that such and such is our last route and we won't go near the bloody thing again but somehow keep getting drawn back...
