Heading to Las Vegas on Sunday (business trip)....got some time for train watching and photos. Any suggestions as to what area would be best? Plan to take a trip to Lake Mead and Hoover Dam as well. Thanks for you helpful hints/suggestions.Michael
Mike, the UP (2 tracks) runs northeast/southwest through town about 1/4 mile west of the "Strip", actually Las Vegas Blvd. The unused Amtrak depot is behind the Plaza Hotel at the west end of Fremont Street. The night time free light show "The Fremont Street Experience" is worth a visit. There are grade crossings at a few streets through town. (thank goodness, no accidents in the 12 years I've been here) The yards are about 10 miles to the southwest of town. Take Las Vegas Blvd. south to Blue Diamond Rd turn right (west) and follow your hood ornament until you see the grade crossing. The yard is 1/4 mile to the south. I've never tried to approach the yard. The dam tour is time well spent. Most impressive. Your best odds against the house is Blackjack. Video gambling is a road to the poorhouse. As always, it's a matter of luck. Have fun.

If you have the extra time, make the 2 hour drive south to Kingman, AZ to the very busy BNSF mainline. Take the old national road back into the canyon for some terric vantage points.Chris Bogley Syracuse New York
