The stories of those who work in the profession of railroading really interest me. Does anyone have suggestions for books that offer collections of professional's stories? Alternatively, any suggestions for well-done non-fiction works dealing with various other industries. Thank you in advance.
I would look for old copies of Railroad Magazine, especially the older ones (pre-1960). They have fiction and non-fiction short stories about railroaders. The very old ones have stories from the lives of men (and women) who worked in the 19th Century. There is also a lot of information on railroads that no longer exist.I find them on E-Bay.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century! www.kelticsylk.com
Try "Set up running: The Life of a Pennsylvania Railroad Engineman, 1904-1949" by John W. Orr. It is a son's recounting of his father's career as an engineer on the Pennsylvania Railroad during the first half of the last century.Larry
The best book I have ever read was "The Blue Streak Mercahndise" by Fred Frailey. That was when railroading was at its best. I will recommend it to anyone.

RE: Suggested Reading
Recently I bought the book Two Track Main, which is a story about an IC engineer at the time of the diesel invasion. He loved the Mountain steamers and hated the diesels. Theres refrences to F-Units, early ALCo's and some GP7's and 9's.It was pretty good, but relitivly short. (170 pages or somthing like that)-Dave
