I had a decent time, definatly different than ever trip I have made since the first Railfest. The trip around Tyrone was pretty neat, did anybody else ride the 11:30 AM Sunday train? There were a lot of rumors flying around on whether it was Norfolk Southern's or the Altoona Railroaders Museum's fault that there was no trip around the curve this year. I had never been to Tyrone before though so it was cool, man do the trains fly by a lot faster through there than Altoona. I took my video camera and there where a lot of 2 train meets today at Tyrone. Strangely enough we actually spent a lot of time talking to, of all people, a Norfolk Southern policeman. (and no we didnt do anything wrong ). Apparently there are only 3 policemen covering the area between Cresson and Tyrone.
Altoona wasnt much different, the roundhouse isnt even close to being done. The E8's where there, everyone was able to go in the cab and blow the horn. The model train shows werent very good this year either. (More money for the Greenberg show at Monroeville next month!!! )
Anyhow it was a decent weekend, nothing really special accept for the Tyrone excursion. I dont know how much longer there will be a Railfest, the only thing I can see making it a huge event again is the return of K4 1361.
So did anybody else go??

RE: Just got back from Railfest '04.

Just arrived home earlier this afternoon. Mrs. Fuzzums and I were on the 4:30 Saturday excursion in the cabin car--the discussion I had with the missus explaining "cabin car" vs. "caboose" will go down in history as rivaling Abbott and Costello's "Who's On First" sketch in my opinion. We went by Cresson after the excursion for dinner (pizza at Vito's on Front Street across from the tracks). Sunday we jumped between the Curve, Cresson, and Tyrone. We drove down from Cresson to Tyrone Sunday afternoon to chase an autorack with two UP-painted tunnel motors; I had no idea that we would arrive in time to see the E's heading back east on their way home, very cool. Cresson was holding their annual Heritage Days festival that weekend too, and the car show they had going on was a nice diversion while waiting for the trains to show up. The finale for me was Sunday evening watching the gathering of a half-dozen 80MACs at the Cresson terminal, including 2 in whiteface; they had 7213 (non-whiteface black scheme) positioned almost directly in front of the observation deck as if to pose it for photos. All in all it was a good weekend of train-watching, definitely a lot of variety. The crowd volume was indeed depressing, but I chalked it up to having people spread out between Tyrone, the museum, and Horseshoe for various events. I always like when the wife refers to returning to such an event not as an "if" but a "when"; I know I'll be back. Mr. F

I'd count it as a pretty good weekend considering that the E's weren't running. The excursion on the N&BE was probably the best part of the weekend, great weather and nothing beats riding on the platform of a caboose on a cool fall day. Gotta admit the track was in great shape for a shortline, we were going at a pretty good clip once we get out of Tyrone. The excursion was the only Railfest activity I attended, the rest of the time I spent railfanning around Altoona. Thanks for the heads up about the 8th street bridge Mr. F, it was by far the best location I've been to in Altoona. Unfortuantly I had to leave right after the excursion (about 1:30 pm) so a I missed the UP T-motors and the SD80MAC's and also three BNSF warbonnets which another railfan on the 8th St. bridge said went through at around 11:30 (a half an hour before I got there). Well, back to looking through the 100 plus digitals I took over the weekend

Warbonnets? D'oh! If that was on Sunday, we got to the Curve around noon---the things you miss sometimes. At least you got good weather for the excursion; it started raining on us as we pulled out Saturday afternoon. Never stronger than a hard drizzle, but the speed magnified it. The sun came back out a few minutes after we started the return leg; I got a nice bit of out-the-cupola footage when we started the street running. Glad the tip worked out for ya; first time I was there (Aug 94) it was raining and I was filming from under an umbrella. Here's a shot of the UP units headed around the curve in Tyrone (two Dash 9's on the point). The train was solid autoracks--fingernails on a chalkboard have got nothin' on 89' cars going around a sharp curve at ~35mph, let me tell you.
